He was born April 17, 1906, in Oakville, Iowa to Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Carlson. He grew up in Oakville and worked there until coming to Yellowstone Park in 1937 where he worked for four years. His retirement years were spent doing the things he liked best; fishing, hunting, bowling and working at his other hobbies. Survivors include the widow; three sons, Bill Carlson of Deer Lodge, Ken and Chuck Carlson of Columbus, one daughter, Mrs. Marie Haag of Billings; four sisters, Mrs. Irene Woodrum of Lockridge, IA, Mrs. Ruth Kallenberger and Mrs. Anna Jennings of Wapello, IA and Mrs. Esther Cooper of Burlington, IA and five grandchildren. Services were held Wednesday at the Community Congregational Church in Columbus with Rev. Al Thompson officiating. Burial was in Mountainview Cem. Nov. 1968 – Glenn "Swede" Carlson will call it quits on November 15 as he retires from the State Highway Department after 26 years of duty. Swede is shown here at a retirement party held at the Lake Hills Country Club in Billings receiving his gold painted shovel. It was Swede's old favorite shovel he has used for many a year. It came up missing one day and this is the way he got it back. The union presented him with two sets of horseshoes. Ref: Florence Carlson – Glenn, from "Guinea" to "Swede" – Glenn, nicknamed "Guinea" when a freckled boy, third in a family of seven children, was born and raised in Oakville, Iowa. He attended grade school in Oakville and began High School. However, due to his fathers' ill health, he quit school in the first or second year to help in his fathers' business, a shoe and watch repair shop. "Guinea" worked for many farmers in the surrounding area. During the winter he hunted raccoon, and trapped muskrats and anything with a fur pelt to sell to help with expenses at home. His "coon" dogs were his pride and joy. He loved baseball and played with the local ball team. Also, he loved to pitch horseshoes. He loved competition – and usually won. When the bowling alley opened in Columbus, he was 54 and that was a "natural" for him. Maybe the years of horseshoe pitching were to his advantage. He usually maintained a 180 average. "Guinea" came to Yellowstone Park the fall of 1937 to work for his sister and brother-in-law, Inez and Rudolph "Dolph" Egger. They were the winter keepers at the Canyon Hotel and he was hired to be their helper. Clearing the snow off the Hotel and adjoining buildings was their job. He loved the Park, snow shoeing and skiing. In the summer months he worked for the Yellowstone Park Co., on various jobs in connection with the Canyon Hotel engine room and plumbing. Early in the fall of 1938, he broke his arm. Since she couldn't work, he returned to Iowa for the winter. Naturally, he trapped and hunted again. He returned to Yellowstone in March 1938 to work in the Canyon Hotel area for Dolph until Oct. 1940. In July 1939, "Guinea" and Florence Brown, a waitress at the Canyon Transportation Mess Hall ("gear jammers" mess hall) were married. A Big Change for "Guinea". In November 1940 "Guinea" and Florence to Iowa to visit and spent a few months with his folks. He trapped and hunted again, much to the concern of the local hunters and trappers. They didn't realize that even through he had lived in Yellowstone National Park, he was still a resident of Iowa. Mid January, he was ready to return to the west. The first addition to the family, a boy, arrived April 6, 1941 in Billings, MT. He returned to Yellowstone Park for the summer, coming to Columbus in the fall to be with his family. Work was scarce that winter but he was temporarily employed on various farms, on the railroad, Stillwater County roads, then began to work for the Montana State Highway Department in June of 1942. This was the beginning of the nickname "Swede". He worked for the Highway department for a total of 26 ½ years. At first, he worked with an "extra gang" out of Billings that resurfaced roads in an area covering five counties. He spent a couple of winters in the State Highway paint shop and a couple of winters at the Transportation Weight Station near Laurel. In 1948, he got the job as assistant to the Maintenance Supervisor for Stillwater County, in Columbus. This he liked as he could sty home, tend his garden and fish and hunt. During these years his family had grown and now there were four; William "Bill", Marie, Kenneth "Ken" and Charles "Chuck". Naturally, all learned to like fishing and hunting – all learned gardening was part of the Carlson's living. His first heart attack was the last of Nov. 1967, which hospitalized him for nearly a month, and home for another three months. He worked until the following Nov. when he decided to retire. He realized working in cold weather wasn't for him anymore. He missed the guys he'd worked with for many years but kept in touch. "Swede" Carlson had many friends among the highway employees in south central Montana. He always liked to draw so consequently everything, from his lunch bucket to his rifles, were decorated with writing or carving. He did several pen and ink etchings which are treasured by his children. After retiring, his many hobbies kept him busy. He learned to tie flies (for fishing). He supplied a local store with "Carlson's Hand Tied Flies". He sold fish bait winter and summer. The agate hunting that began when working on the road, near gravel pits, developed into sawing and polishing Agates in winters as well as "rock hunting" in summers. After getting a pickup, camper and boat many rivers and lakes were explored. In the last year to two he began trapping again, raccoon, bobcat, coyote, muskrats, beaver ---. There still may be some of his traps out in the hills! The day he decided he was going to ski one more time, in our back yard, was his undoing. When he came into the house and sat down he said, "I forgot how much work that was". His last words. HE had a massive heart attack. He had enjoyed doing the things he liked until his least breath.
