Excerpt from A Year to Remember 1903 By Elsie (Riemann) Blythe b. 1895-1974 (unsure when it was written) As a child of seven, on a farm in central Kansas (near Claflin, Barton County) just after the turn of the century, our family experienced a year to remember. We had been snowbound much of the winter. The boys (her older brothers, John and Henry) were kept busy making paths, feeding the livestock, pumping water and other necessary chores. There is something pleasant about complete isolation, if it isn’t too prolonged - - the world hut out, all the joy and peace of home shut in. One cold raw blustery March day, my brother-in-law (Fred Harzman) came over on his homemade sled, drawn by frothy horses in spite of around zero temperature. Would Mother (Cynthia) come with him…his wife (Grace Fannie, our sister) was down with the flu, and epidemic which was prevalent at the time. Mother was obviously worried. Influenza…in her condition (late in her pregnancy). A week later he brought Mother home. When Neal, my twin brother, and I saw them drive down the lane toward our house, we jumped up and down with glee shouting at the top of our voices: “Mama’s home, Mama’s home and she’s got a little baby!” (Grace Fannie Harzman Paxson). Minutes later the entire family sat in the dining-living room sobbing. Our sister had died the day before. The doctor didn’t arrive in time…no telephones…road almost impassable. The nearest undertaker was more than twenty miles, so Mother, with the help of the lady across the road, had “laid out” her daughter for burial.
