The fire was reported Friday morning but an exact time wasn't given in the release. Russell's funeral is planned for Monday at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton. "She always said, 'Oh, I won't either,'" said Pat Russell, her daughter-in-law. "I don't know how that happened." Yet Grace Russell celebrated her 100th birthday this past April. And she was living a full life when she died Friday in a fire at her longtime home in Fullerton, Neb.: 100 years, six months and six days after she was born. The blaze appears to have been caused by an overheated furnace that led to the ignition of the floor joists, the Nance County Attorney's Office said. Grace Russell was pronounced dead at the Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning due to smoke inhalation. Born Grace Gladys Milby, she spent her life in Fullerton. Her husband, Arthur L. Russell, a farmer and livestock breeder, died in 1992 at age 93. They were married 66 years. Grace Russell was able to take care of herself. "She knew everything," Pat Russell said. "Her mind was good. She done her own housework. . . . She clipped her hedge, raked. . . . She was remarkable." She had two children, both boys, one of whom died in 2000, Pat Russell said. She also had six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and two step-great-great grandchildren. She was kind and loving but could be very direct at times. "She just told you like it was. If there was something she didn't like, she told you about it," Pat Russell said. Grace Russell had the ranch-style house she and her husband purchased in 1955 refurbished last year. It had brand-new vinyl siding and a new garage door. The house now appears destroyed, Pat Russell said. Grace Russell's funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton. Visitation is today from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
