I and my husband live on our farm in Northern California. I am a descendent of a long line of farmers and pioneers. My father, Robert J. Ramsey Jr., is a farmer in this same area as was his father, Robert J. Ramsey. My great grandfather was Robert R. Ramsey who came from Scotland and fought in the Civil War.He married my great grandmother, Nellie Casaday. Mr. Ramsey, as he is called by my father, built the family house in Yountville on the corner of Monroe and Jefferson. I used to love to play in the huge yard when I was a little girl. There are now three houses built where the yard once was. We would go there to visit my two great, great aunts, Grace Casaday and Mabel Frost. Nellie Casaday was the daughter of Andrew Jackson Casaday who, along with his parents Ruben and Eliza Casaday, crossed over the trails to California by covered wagon in 1853. Nellie's mother was Lydia M. Green. Her parents also came from Missouri to California by covered wagon in 1846. Lydia's parents were John D. Green and Lydia Hitchcock Green. In a family letter, it is written that Lydia was the first "white" baby born in Stockton, CA Lydia M. Green was first married to Andrew Jackson Casaday. They had at least five children. After Andrew passed away in 1881, Lydia married Andrew's much younger brother by 17 years, David Albert Casaday and had at least three more children. "Sorry to report the death of Grace Casaday, an old time resident of Yountville, who died Monday, June 15 at the age of 93. She was born in Watsonville, but came to Yountville when she was a child of 6 months. She was employed for over 40 years at the Napa State Hospital, and retired in 1946. Mrs. Casaday's grandparents were part of the famous and much publicized Donner Party, and made their home in Stockton. Mrs. Casaday Is survived by a sister, Mrs. Mabel Frost who also lives in Yountville. She was buried in the Yountville Cemetery, after the services at the Chapel of Richard Pierce Funeral home in Napa." - St. Helena Star (July 2, 1970) "Grace Casaday The descendant of a pioneer family which came to California with the Donner Party, Grace Casady, who had made her home in Yountville at 6903 Jefferson St., died today after a brief illness at Kaiser Hospital in Vallejo at the age of 93. Her grandparents settled in Stockton after coming to the west with the famed Donner Party. A native of Watsonville, Mrs. Casaday lived in Yountville since the age of six months. A member of the Retired State Employees Association, she retired in 1946 as an attendant at Napa State Hospital where she had been employed for 46 years. She was a 50 year member of Eshcol Parlor 16, Native Daughters of the Golden West. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Mabel C. Frost of Yountville; a niece and six nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Casaday will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Chapel of Richard Pierce Funeral Service, with the Rev. Erwin Bollinger officiating. Interment will follow at Yountville Cemetery. Casketbearers are Ray Huyck, Felix Tonascia, John Wichels, John Lande, George Merkel and Julius Massoni." - The Napa Register (June 15, 1970) A book of Board Meeting Minutes from the George C. Yount Cemetery from July 1894 - January 1960, has provided some new information: "Lot holders" were allowed to attend meetings and vote. In both May 1939 and May 1953, she took advantage of this and was present as a lot holder.
