Barghahn, nee Gracie Maggert, daughter of Martin and Lydia Shaw Maggert, was born October 7, 1888, at Cromwell, Indiana, and died at her home here in Elkader, February 10, 1941, at the age of fifty-two years, four months, and three days. Mrs. Barghahn came to Elkader in the year 1903. On October 23, 1906, she was united in marriage to John G. Barghahn at McGregor, Iowa. One son, Kenneth C., was born to this union and survives his mother. Mrs. Barghahn's death was a stunning blow, not only to her family but also to the many friends who enjoyed her vivacious personality, for she had been in good health through most of her life. On the day of her death she went about her household duties apparently as well as usual. About noon she complained of a slight headache, which increased in severity until she lapsed into unconsciousness, from which she never emerged, being called to her reward at 11:30 that night. Early in life Mrs. Barghahn became affiliated with the United Brethren church. The deceased was a responsible, dependable wife and mother. The proverb "Cleanliness is next to Godliness" summarizes her philosophy of life. She believed this true of those things both material and moral. Her own home and habits and the esteem in which she was held by those who knew her, all are testimonies of her practice of this belief. She leaves to mourn her departure her husband, one son, Kenneth, of Grinnell, Iowa; a brother and three sisters, Clarence Maggert, of Elkader; Mrs. Georgia McGarvey and Mrs. George McKinney, both of Manchester; and Mrs. August Miller, Oelwein. She also leaves an infant grandchild, Linda Louise.
