Grace Marie was born March 18, 1950, to Jesse and Carrie (Jensen) Whiting at Ord. She was raised in the Davis Creek area, where she attended Union Ridge School and graduated from North Loup High School in 1969. On Sept. 2, 1967, Grace was united in marriage to Russell Coufal at Cotesfield Methodist Church. The couple lived in St. Paul, where Grace worked at various jobs. In 1987, they moved to the farm east of Scotia. Following the death of Russell in 2002, Grace moved into Scotia and later to North Loup. She purchased the café in North Loup and operated Grace Marie’s Café until her health forced her to retire in 2007. Grace has made her home in North Loup with her partner, Bob Wondercheck. The couple enjoyed traveling, especially to Texas for Bob’s work. During her retirement, Grace continued to cook and cater around the area. Grace belonged to the Methodist Faith. She was active in the International Harvester Collector Club and had served as President. She was a member of numerous community organizations, including the Lions Club, North Loup Community Club, VFW Auxiliary and Scotia Women’s Club. She was a First Responder on the NLS Rescue Unit and the coordinator for the North Loup Junk Jaunt. Grace enjoyed gardening, canning, flowers and quilting. Her family was the most important part of her life and she loved spending her time with all of her grandchildren. She will be remembered for helping anyone in need and being an outstanding community member and volunteer. Left to cherish her memory are her two sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Ann Coufal of Gretna and Lynn and Kara Coufal of Ord; her foreign exchange student, Rodrigo Viegas of Brazil; her partner, Bob Wondercheck of North Loup; 17 grandchildren, Grant, Garrett, Gregory and Garrison Gebhardt, Keithan and Courtney Coufal, Mariah and Seth Kennedy, Dalton, Jordon, Kelsey and Dylynn Coufal, Blake Moderow, Kaitlyn Hoppes, Parker, Izabel and Elanor Coufal; a great-granddaughter, Tenley Malcom; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Bob Sevenker of Ord; and four brothers and two sisters-in-law, Floyd Whiting of Afton, Wyo., Max and Bev Whiting of Billings, Mont., Garry and Linda Whiting of Clay Center and Larry Whiting of North Loup. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Russell; her daughter, Jeanette Gebhardt; and a sister-in-law, Georgia (Mrs. Floyd) Whiting.
