Description	:	Granville J. "Grannie" Edgmond was a kind and gentle soul who was born in Ballantine on April 18, 1913. He grew up around Ballantine and Huntley Project, then moved to Billings. During the Depression, he held many jobs, including wrapping wire for the Fort Peck Dam. "Grannie" Edgmond was a kind and gentle soul who was born in Ballantine on April 18, 1913. He grew up around Ballantine and Huntley Project, then moved to Billings. During the Depression, he held many jobs, including wrapping wire for the Fort Peck Dam. During World War II, he was stationed at Fort Sill, Okla., where he not only taught at the field artillery school, but also drew the technical illustrations for the artillery manual. After the war, he returned to Montana where he worked for the Army Corps of Engineers and helped build Canyon Ferry Dam. He married Pearl LaRene (Rene) West on May 15, 1949. They raised two children together and celebrated 54 years of marriage. For many years, Grannie worked in the bridge division of the Montana Highway Department, where he designed many of the bridges on I-90 between Great Falls and Helena, including the first ever banked and curved bridge in the country. He went on to be appointed to the Federal Highway Commission. Grannie could build and fix anything, he was self-taught with no project too big or small. He was an accomplished sketch artist, who drew many pictures of events in his life and created many wonderful wood animal sculptures that he brought to life with paint and perfect expressions. One year, he surprised each of his children with a perfect scale model wooden replica of their Helena home, complete with doors, windows, roof and interior lighting. He spent many hours quizzing his children, Kristie and Geoff, with math word puzzles, "If one train leaves Missoula going 30 mph and the other leaves Billings going 40 mph, when will they crash?" He did his own wiring, plumbing, woodwork and any and all repair projects. There was nothing he couldn't fix. He was a nature lover and loved to fish. He enjoyed showing his children the joy of finding the perfect Christmas tree in the great outdoors. Grannie had a green thumb and could grow anything from seed, sprout or cutting. He actually rooted a golden willow in a bucket in his garage for years and proved others wrong, when he successfully planted it in the front yard on Cooke Street. After retiring in 1976, Rene and Grannie sold their home in Helena and moved to California, where they enjoyed pinochle parties, family get-togethers and many bus trips to Reno. They loved to travel and lived an active lifestyle. In 1999, they moved back to Billings for their remaining years. Rene passed away there on Oct. 25, 2003. Some people would give up after losing a partner of so many years, but Grannie flourished. He won almost every costume contest at his retirement center, danced the jig on St. Patrick's Day at age 91 and was well known for the many colorful shirts that he always wore. He always had a smile or a joke and never complained about anyone or anything. He was loved and respected by all who knew him and enriched the lives of all around him. He broke a hip in August 2006, but he quickly recovered and returned to independent living. He fell and hit his head and had brain surgery in April of 2007. He celebrated his 94th birthday in rehab and again recovered and returned home in just over a month. Unfortunately, one fall too many caused Grannie to pass away on June 27, 2007, surrounded by family. He is survived by his children, Kristie of San Diego, and Geoff and wife, Sherry of Columbus, Ga.; sisters, Alice, Laura, Rose and Eva; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and friends too numerous to count, including everyone at Aspen View Retirement in Billings and his caregiver, Debbie Becker, who saved his life more than once. His joy of life and sense of humor will be sadly missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held graveside at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Helena at 11 a.m., on Saturday, June 30, followed by a casual get-together.
