He grew up in Ripley County where he attended Belleview West School. One of his teachers there was Twitter Corlee. On July 17, 1910 at age 21 he married Sarah Effie Adams. All eight children were born at Old Burr at home in the same house. They were delivered by a midwife. The Cates family farmed in the Old Burr Community and also owned and operated a sorghum mill. One of Cleveland's hobbies was to carve and whittle a variety of things out of wood. He also played the fiddle. He read westerns and mysteries,especially Zane Grey ans Perry Mason. History was also very important to him and he would read anything he could find about history. Mail was delivered on Monday, Wednesday and Friday on a rural route, Joe Privett was the mail carrier. It was a two and a half mile walk to the mailbox. The heating stove was the box type with no chimney! Many times sparks would ignite the shingled roof and a bucket brigade would be formed from the spring to the house, The cooking stove was a warmer and a large reservoir. This was the hot water heater of their day. In the winter the old galvanized washtub also served as the family bathtub. In summer the creek was a bath site. The spring branch served as a refrigerator for storing milk and butter. There was no electricity and no telephone service. In 1950 Cleveland went to Arizona with his daughter Ada. From there he went to San Bernardino, CA where he spent a few years working in a fruit packing plant, returning to Ripley County in 1955. In the late 60's he purchased property in West Doniphan. He married Vernie Billups Guilliam in 1968. He remained in West Doniphan until his death May 27, 1976. The funeral was in Edwards Funeral Hone in Doniphan on May 29, 1976 and he was buried in Johnston Chapel Cemetery near his parents.
