The Post & Mail - Columbia City, Whitley County, Indiana Monday July 22, 1996 Gusta A. Robinett, 91, died at 4:05 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, 1996, at Warren Memorial Home in Huntington County. She was born June 3, 1905 in Whitley County, a daughter of Harvey M. and Pearl M. Glick Robinette. Gusta was reared in Jefferson Township. In 1930, she went to China returning to the United States from 1943 to 1947. In 1947, she again went to China. When she retired in 1974, she came back to make her home again in Jefferson Township. In July 1992, she entered the United Methodist Home at Warren. She served as a Christian Missionary for the United Methodist Church for 42 years and before that she taught in the public schools in Whitley County. After getting her teaching license, she took a position with the Brimstone Elementary School, Jefferson Township, where she taught three years. She went from there to another position teaching in the Crowell School near Raber, Whitley County. She left there to enter Asbury College in Kentucky. In 1930, she left public school teaching in Whitley County and sailed for China to begin missionary service. From 1943 through 1947 she returned to the United States speaking and studying. She took theological training at Garrett Biblical Institute, Evanston, Ill., and was graduated in 1946 with a bachelor of divinity degree. In 1947 she returned to China. She taught English and Religious Education at a women's Bible training and high school in Yen-Ping and then did rural Christian evangelistic work in Fuklan Province until 1950. She was forced to leave the country because of the Communist conquest of the area. After three years of lecturing in the United States, Miss Robinett was assigned by the United Methodist Church to Sumatra, where for five years she taught in Bible Training Schools and in 1953 she was assigned to Indonesia to serve as pastor of Indonesia, Chinese and English speaking United Methodist churches. In 1959, she was appointed district superintendent of the Chinese district, a position she held until 1964, when the United Methodist Church in Indonesia became autonomous. At the time, Miss Robinett transferred her membership to the North Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church. She retired in 1974 but continued speaking and studying in the United States. She had the distinction of being the first female worldwide District Superintendent of the United Methodist Church. She received her formal education in the public schools of Jefferson Township, graduating from Jefferson Center High School with the Class of 1923. Following this she enrolled in Manchester College, North Manchester, where she earned her teaching license. In 1929, she earned a bachelor of arts degree in education from Asbury College, Wilmore, Ky. She received a bachelor of divinity degree in 1946 from Garrett Biblical Institute, Evanston, Ill. Miss Robinett has been an active member of the Jefferson Chapel United Methodist Church, it's Women's Society of Christian Service and North Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church. Surviving relatives include a sister, Pauline E. Robinette, Warren; a brother, Joseph W. Robinette, Warren; two nephews, James H. Taylor, Athens Tenn., and David Barr, Fort Wayne; and two nieces Mrs. Richard (Dorthea) Wilson, Columbia City, and Virginia Crabbs, Frederick, Md. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sisters, Imogene Robinette Barr and Gertrude I. Robinette Taylor; and brothers, Roscoe A. Robinette, 1-year-old and Ford M. Robinett. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday at Jefferson Chapel United Methodist Church, Columbia City, with the Rev. Lucinda Hamilton officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Warren Home, and from noon until the time of service at the church. Burial will be at Jefferson Chapel (Sand Bank), Columbia City.
