Sterling, in Van Buren County on October 24, 1885, one of four sons and four daughters born of the marriage of Giles and Lois Jones Pettit. His death at the Davis County Hospital April 14, 1970 at the age of 84 followed an extended confinement at that hospital. His brothers and sisters all preceded him in death. As a young man, Pettit worked as a farm hand on his father's farm and for neighboring farmers. His public school education ended upon completion of the eighth grade, but he later enrolled in the Southern Iowa Normal at Bloomfield and following his graduation there, taught in rural schools in both Davis and Van Buren Counties. On March 16, 1910 he was united in marriage to Mamie Ruth Young. To this marriage were born two sons, Lowell E. Pettit, who preceded him in death on July 5, 1964 and Charles N. Pettit, who survives. Mamie Pettit died January 16, 1942 at the age of 56. Early in his adulthood, Pettit became a member of the Christian Chruch at Mt. Sterling and later upon moving his family to Bloomfield transferred his membership to the Bloomfield Christian Church, were he actively participated in the work of the church. Following several years at Mt. Sterling where he operated a general merchandise store. Pettit in 1917 embarked upon his career as an auctioneer, in which profession he later gained national recognition as an auctioneer of registered livestock, specializing initially in the sale of Duroc hogs and later in the sale of polled Hereford cattle. He was an active member and loyal supporter of the National Auctioneer's Associaion. In the early 1930's he became associated with the Reppert School of Auctioneering at Decatur, Ind., where he served on its faculty and continued the active practice of his profession until November 1962, when a serious illness forced his retirement at the age of 77. On February 27, 1943, Pettit was united in marriage with Ferne Stark Pettit, who survives him along with his son, Charles; four grandchildren and three great-granchildren. After his serious illness in 1962, Pettit recuperated and led a reasonably active life in retirementt until December 1967 when he was again hospitalized. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. April 17, 1970 at the Priester Funeral Chapel, Bloomfield, conducted by the Rev. Robert Allen. Interment was in the IOOF Cemetery.
