Description	:	Hannah Bell, a daughter of Hannah (née Finch) and John Bell, was born in Belmont County, Ohio. Her family moved in fall 1817 to Bellville, Richland County, Ohio, a village founded by her grandfather Robert Bell. Hannah's father purchased 260 acres in Richland County's Blooming Grove Township the following spring, and settled his family there. The couple were the parents of nine children (three of whom died in infancy). Thomas and Hannah Knott moved often, as shown by successive census records: 1840 - Steuben County, Indiana 1850 - Hillsdale County, Michigan 1860 and 1870 - Cedar County, Iowa 1880 - Jefferson County, Illinois In addition to these relocations, Hannah Knott was apart from her husband Thomas, senior, for long periods while he sought success in the West. According to son John Wilson Knott, in spring 1852 Thomas, senior, (accompanied by his eldest son Elzy) left his family in Jonesville, Hillsdale County, Michigan. Hannah Knott later went with her younger children to live with her parents in Huron County, Ohio, where Thomas, senior, joined them in spring 1855. The reunited family lived briefly in Delaware, Delaware County, Ohio, before moving in 1856 to Cedar County, Iowa. Thomas, senior, again went West, and returned in winter 1861. Thomas Knott traded his Cedar County property for another property, and in 1877 or 1878 settled near Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois. Hannah Knott returned to Tipton after the death of her husband in 1887, and died there in 1892. Obituary "Hannah Knott, whose maiden name was Hannah Bell, was born near Mansfield, Ohio, July 11, 1811, and died at Tipton, Iowa, Dec. 23d, 1892, aged 81 years, 5 months and 12 days. "Her early life was spent in Ohio, immediately after the war of 1812, in the midst of hard times and few advantages. In 1828 she was married to Thomas Knott and soon after removed to Steuben county, Ind., and where she lived until the spring of 1842, when the family moved to Hillsdale county, Mich., where she lived for many years. They subsequently moved to Ohio and came to Tipton, Iowa, in 1856, where she has lived ever since, excepting the period from 1877 to 1887, passed at Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Mrs. Knott was a member of the M. E. church from her girlhood, with the exception of a short time in which she united with the Presbyterian church to go with her husband, but after his death was pleased to return to her old home. Three of her brothers were preachers of the gospel, two of them in the M. E. church and one in the United Brethren church. Her faith and hope in a dying hour seemed constant and unshaken. She was much of the time engaged in prayer and looked forward with great desire to her deliverance from pain and ascension to immortality." Hannah Knott (née Bell) was born in Belmont Co., Ohio, and grew up and married in Richland Co., Ohio, of which Mansfield is the county seat. Notes A volume of early Richland County, Ohio, marriage records for the late 1820s into the 1830s is no longer extant. According to Thomas Jefferson Knott, senior's, autobiographical account: "In 1828, I took me a companion by the name of Miss Hannah Bell, of the family of the proprietors of the little town (in said Richland Co. Ohio) in Bellville." Hannah's obit. (above) agrees with 1828. His obit. alternatively offers 6 November 1829 as the marriage date. (Thomas Jefferson Knott, senior, obit.: "Knott," Mt. "John Bell, eldest son of Robert Bell [...] married Hannah Finch [...] To her marriage with Mr. Bell seven children were born in Belmont county, namely: [...fifth ] Hannah, widow of Thomas Knott of Tipton, Iowa [...] In the fall of 1817 John Bell and family moved to Bellville, Richland Co., Ohio. In the spring of the following year he purchased 260 acres of land at two dollars and fifty cents per acre, in Bloominggrove township, and on that tract established his home." (Bio. of David S. "At the time of their [the Bending family's] arrival, Sept. 8, 1836, there were but three white families in the present village of Jamestown [Steuben Co., Indiana], John Knott, Thomas Knott and John Bell being the heads of the families."
