Description	:	The Reverend John Wilson Knott, a Presbyterian minister, was a son of Hannah (née Bell) and Thomas Jefferson Knott, senior. He was born in Steuben County, Indiana, where his family had settled in 1835. The Knott family moved in 1840 to adjacent Hillsdale County, Michigan. In spring 1855, John Wilson Knott entered the freshman class of the Ohio Wesleyan University, in Delaware, Delaware County, Ohio. He was born in Steuben County, Indiana, where his family had settled in 1835. The Knott family moved in 1840 to adjacent Hillsdale County, Michigan. In spring 1855, John Wilson Knott entered the freshman class of the Ohio Wesleyan University, in Delaware, Delaware County, Ohio. That summer, he was stricken with typhoid fever, and near death for 3 weeks. He afterwards returned to his parents' home (then living with his Bell grandparents in Huron County, Ohio). The Knott family moved to Tipton, Cedar County, Iowa, in October 1856. J. W. Knott and Harriet Starr were married on 2 April 1861 in Cedar County, after a 2-year engagement. He farmed until entering the McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago in 1864 (leaving his wife and infant son with her parents). He was licensed to preach in 1866, and ordained in 1866. A great-granddaughter, Janice Harshbarger, relates that until his retirement in 1913 (at the age of 77): "Reverend Knott pastored at least 17 churches in his lifetime, with his longest pastorate being about 7 years in Lodi, Wisconsin. He pastored churches in Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Nebraska, Idaho, and Oregon." Rev. James Wilson Knott wrote his Autobiography, July 1914, Ashland Oregon. Aug. 27, 1842, m. Rev. John Wilson, son of Thomas and Hannah (Bell) Knott, b. Mch. 26, 1836, at Jamestown, Ind.; graduated 1867, at the Theological Sem. at Chicago; ordained the same year by the Presbytery of Cedar, Ia.; ministered to several churches in Iowa and Illinois, and since July 1872, pastor of the Presb. Church at Lodi, Wis., which has greatly prospered under his ministry. "KNOTT CHLDREN. "Alfred Edison, b. Jan. 10, 1863, d. Sept. 15, 1865, at Tipton.—Herbert Lowell, b. Jan. 10, 1865.—Walter LeRoy, b. Feb. 19, 1867.—Robert Arthur, b. Feb. 13, 1870, at Mechanicsville, Ia.—Mary Louisa, b. Sept. 28, 1872, at Lodi.—Anna Laura, b. Nov. 3, 1874, d. July 13, 1876." Wilson Knott was pastor of a long series of churches in Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Idaho and Oregon, often serving a year or so. He was pastor at Soda Springs, Idaho, 1896-1899, and at Yoncalla, Oregon 1907-1927.
