The 1851 Census Records in Charlotte Co., NB, place the birth of William and Hannah’s daughter Lydia (as Lidia Rutherford) around 1777 based on her age and report that she entered the county at “Birth” meaning she was born in Charlotte County. Other records suggest she was born in 1778. If the records are correct, then Lydia was born before 1780 in New Brunswick and her parents were likely married prior to her birth and thus prior to 1780. 2. William and Hannah’s daughter Lydia married around 1793 based on when her oldest child, Sarah Jane, was born. If Lydia’s parents married in 1780, Lydia would have been about 13 years old at the most when she married, quite young for a girl to marry and would have been around 14 years old when her first child was born. Lydia likely was born earlier than 1780, again suggesting her parents had already married by 1780. 3. We do not find any record that places Hannah’s husband William Wilmot Hawkins in Massachusetts. He unmistakably was born in Connecticut. He served for a while in the American army in the Revolutionary War before deserting and enlisting in a Loyalist unit on Long Island, New York, in 1777. He unmistakably was in Tory held territory in December 1777. His Loyalist unit had been assigned guard duty in New Brunswick by 1780. He undoubtedly remained in Tory held territory from the time of his desertion until the end of the war. To have ventured into Massachusetts to marry would have meant taking his life in his hands. A woman in Massachusetts who wanted to marry him would likely have traveled to meet him in Tory held lands to marry instead of him risking a visit to Massachusetts. 4. The Massachusetts marriage record does not give a middle name or initial for William Hawkins. When he identified himself in documents and petitions to government officials, he identified himself as William Wilmot Hawkins. Almost every record associated with him uses either William Wilmot Hawkins, Wm. Wilmot Hawkins, or William W. Hawkins to identify him. It seems very unlikely that he would have omitted his middle name or initial on his own wedding record. 5. The 1790 U.S. Census of Newburyport [sic], Essex Co., Massachusetts, where the marriage occurred, reports that a William Hawkins lived there. That census does not report the name of his wife. But this likely was the same William Hawkins who had married in Newbury ten years earlier. Records show that William Wilmot Hawkins and his wife Hannah had clearly settled in Pennfield, New Brunswick, long before 1790 when this census was recorded, again suggesting that the marriage record in Newport was for a different William Hawkins. The names William and Hannah were common names back then and still are today. In light of the above, it is most likely that the marriage in 1780 of a William Hawkins and a Hannah Willet was for a different couple named William and Hannah than for William Wilmot Hawkins and his wife Hannah who settled in Pennfield, New Brunswick, after the Revolutionary War. Therefore, I do not believe the Hannah Willet who married in Newbury, Massachusetts, in 1780 was the woman for whom this memorial was created.
