He remained a Loyalist throughout the remainder of the war. After the war he acquired land from the British in New Brunswick. He married twice, first to Hannah around 1778. Hannah's last name has not been discovered. Her exact date of death is uncertain. However, records place her death between 1799 and 1802. He married next around 1814 to Jane, who was about 40 years younger than him. Jane's last name also is not known. William Wilmot Hawkins and Hannah had three children, born in then Nova Scotia, Canada, but probably the part of Nova Scotia that became New Brunswick when that province was formed from Nova Scotia in 1784. Those three children are: 1. Lydia Hawkins, born about 1778 2. Zadock Hawkins, born about 1781 3. William Hawkins, born about 1783 William Wilmot Hawkins and Jane had two children, born in New Brunswick: 4. Damaris Hawkins, christened on 13 January 1816, died before 22 January 1820 5. Wilmot Hawkins., born about 1818 The names Eliz and Philip appear as children of William Wilmot Hawkins and his first wife, Hannah, in one place and only in one place, a list that was created by someone who was enumerating family members to determine rations for families after the Revolutionary War. On that list his wife Hannah and son Zadock appear. But his known children Lydia and William do not appear, suggesting that the names Eliz and Philip were inserted in their places because someone could not remember the names of all three of William Wilmot Hawkins' children but wanted to insure that his family got their fair share of rations. However, Eliza and Philip may have been children who were never recorded elsewhere and died young. Throughout his lifetime, records that can positively be associated with him used the name William Wilmot Hawkins, William W. Hawkins, or in a couple of rare cases simply William Hawkins. More recently, some have referred to him as Eli William Wilmot Hawkins, a name for which no record appears until more than 90 years after his death. There are approximately two dozen reports that were contemporary with him that used the name William Wilmot Hawkins or William W. Hawkins when referring to him. These are official documents that were submitted to governments or were recorded by government officials, both in Connecticut and New Brunswick, which have his name and in many cases his signature, that signature appearing as William Wilmot Hawkins or William W. Hawkins and never with Eli. His birth record in New Milford, Connecticut, uses the name William Wilmot Hawkins. When he was in the American army during the Revolutionary War, his Service Record referred to him as William W. Hawkins. When he deserted the American army in 1777, his enlistment the next day in a Loyalist unit known as The Royal Fencible Americans was under the name Wm. Wilmot Hawkins. When a list of soldiers and dependents from that same unit of Royal Fencible Americans was compiled in 1784 at Passamaquoddy, New Brunswick, he appeared as William Hawkins. The baptism of his daughter in New Brunswick in 1816 refers to him as Wm. Wilmot Hawkins. A probate record dated 1805 in New Brunswick refers to him as William W. Hawkins. Multiple petitions for land which he submitted to the Provincial government of New Brunswick between 1800 and 1820 were submitted and signed under the name William Wilmot Hawkins. He collected a pension from the New Brunswick Provincial Government under the name William Wilmot Hawkins. After his death in 1842, his second wife collected a widow's pension as the widow of William Wilmot Hawkins until 1860 when she probably either died or remarried. At one time there was a grave marker for him in the the Pennfield United Baptist Cemetery which referred to him as William W. Hawkins. Although the marker has since been lost, its existence with the name William Hawkins was recorded in an article published in 1981 in "Generations," the genealogical publication of the New Brunswick Genealogical Society. This report undoubtedly was based on transcripts of the grave marker inscriptions for the cemetery that were made on 29-30 July 1911 by Mr. D. R. Jack, who recorded his name as William W. Hawkins. The use of the name Eli for him first appears in a list of family members compiled by his great-grandson Roger Hawkins in 1935, more than 90 years after William Wilmot Hawkins died. This Roger Hawkins was born ten years after William Wilmot Hawkins died. And he was born in Ontario, far away from New Brunswick where William Wilmot Hawkins lived. Therefore everything he knew about William Wilmot Hawkins was second hand information compiled from things that other family members told him. Roger Hawkins or someone before him could easily have mixed up names or communicated relationships in a way that mixed up the names or caused Roger Hawkins to mix up the names. It is possible that Eli was a nickname. However, this seems unlikely since it was never written down on any official document during William Wilmot Hawkins' lifetime. The absence of the name Eli from all records made during William Wilmot Hawkins' lifetime is strong evidence that his name really was William Wilmot Hawkins, not Eli William Wilmot Hawkins.
