Read More	Mrs. Hannah Gassman departed this life at her home in Akron, Wednesday morning, October 13, 1954. At the time of her passing she was 80 years, 2 months and 15 days of age. Miss Hannah Peterson was born near Trondhjem, Norway, July 28, 1868. During infancy, she was baptized in the Lutheran church of her native land. When she was but eleven years of age, her mother passed away. Then in the fall of 1880, her father, a brother, a sister and she came to America, so that they arrived in the home of an uncle near Richland, Union County, South Dakota, a short time before Christmas that year. During the following spring of 1881, her father, her uncle and family went west to take a homestead in Charles Mix County, S.D., very shortly after that area had been opened for settlement. Although she went there to live, she was in Union County for a period of time and was confirmed in the Roseni Lutheran Church, near Beresford. She attended school in that area, too, and then later lived and worked in Sioux City. Later, after returning to the home of her father, she met Henning Gassman, whose parents had homesteaded in the same area as the Petersons. Henning Gussman and Hannah Peterson were married at the Peter Shoulberg home, northwest of Akron, July 10, 1897. From the time of their marriage they lived in the Union Creek community all the years of their married life, with the exception of four years at Elk Point, S.D. After her husband's death in June 1919, she continued to live on her Union County farm until 1927, when she moved to Akron, and she lived here until the time of her death. Shortly after her marriage, she joined Union Creek Church, the church in which her husband was an active member. In her own words she writes, "I have been a member here always. Our Church, Our Church, Our Father's and Our Own. Yes, I love our church and I have tried to help a little bit with my helplessness." Those who knew her during those years of over a half a century will testify that she not only tried but succeeded in helping in a loyal, selfless and tireless way that will not be soon forgotten. Her interest in the church led her to be a teacher in both the Union Creek and Immanuel Sunday schools for many years or as long as she was able. She had an unusual interest in children, and young people, and undoubtedly maintained a youthful spirit and outlook as a result of this. To be sure, she seemed interested in all of life about her, so that anyone's need quickly became her concern. Her Christian personality evidenced a wholesome piety, and a love for the cause of her Lord. In many ways she made it clear that she was completely dependent upon His mercy, grace, goodness and love as she lived from day to day. Left to mourn her departure are: Her daughter, Mrs. Margaret Stoutenburg, of Union County, S.D.; her two sons, Grant, of Akron, and Marvin, of Dallas, Texas; three grandchildren, one great grandchild, other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the Union Creek Lutheran Church Friday afternoon, preceded by a brief service in the Lewison Funeral Home, with Pastor David J. Roy officiating. "Behold a Host" was sung by Mrs. Milton Anderson, while "The Stranger of Galilee" and "All the Way My Saviour Leads Me" was sung by her grandson, Clark Gassman. Both singers were accompanied by Mrs. Henning Shoulberg. Mrs. Henry Fickbohm played appropriate organ music.
