Word of her death was received at this place shortly before the Unit went to press. Mrs. Masterson was one of the best known pioneer women of the Orland country, and one of the most highly respected. "Orland Unit" (Orland, California), Tuesday, 10 May 1927 MRS JAMES MASTERSON Well Known Orland Lady's Funeral Saturday The funeral of Mrs. James Masterson, who died shortly after midnight last Thursday morning, was held from Saint Monica's Catholic church in Willows on Saturday, and was attended by a large concourse of those who had known the lady during life, and who wished to show their last token of respect and esteem at this time. For a half century she had been a friend and a neighbor in the true sense of the word to a wide circle of acquaintanceship, one of the best known women in northern Glenn county, and her demise was sincerely mourned by all who knew her. She had lived a life of usefulness, and had lain down to a rest that had been well earned. Mrs. James Masterson, whose maiden name was Hannah Quinn, was born at Benicia on August 11, 1861, of one of the pioneer families of that old town. She was raised in Mendocino county, and on November 1st, 1878, was united in marriage to James Masterson, the two being wedded in the little Catholic church that had stood from the early days in Red Bluff. The newly married pair settled on the ranch near Newville, and they welcomed to their home four children, Mary, Edward H. and Louise. In 1890 the family moved to Orland, and her one more child, Marcus, came to bless the family. Orland was the home of Mr. and Mrs. Masterson for thirty-seven years, till death came to part them. Mrs. Masterson had been in poor health for the past three years, a sufferer from rheumatism, but she was seemingly as well as usual when she went for a visit last week to the home of her daughter in Willows, and was really ill only two days before her death, only long enough for her family to gather round her before the end came, swiftly, but peacefully. The remains were interred in the Catholic cemetery at Willows. - Transcribed by E.
