Description	:	Harley E. Heffelfinger, 88, of rural Loudonville died peacefully in his sleep early Sunday morning, Sept. 23, 2012, at his home after working the day before on his beloved farm. Harley was born March 4, 1924, on the family farm in Hanover Township, Ashland County, and was the son of Herman and Ruth (née Brennstuhl) Heffelfinger. Heffelfinger, 88, of rural Loudonville died peacefully in his sleep early Sunday morning, Sept. 23, 2012, at his home after working the day before on his beloved farm. Harley was born March 4, 1924, on the family farm in Hanover Township, Ashland County, and was the son of Herman and Ruth (née Brennstuhl) Heffelfinger. He was a 1942 graduate of Loudonville High School and member of the FFA, receiving his State Farmer Degree. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving on the USS Salerno Bay aircraft carrier in the South Pacific as a Corsair aircraft mechanic. Harley was a livestock, dairy and grain farmer all his life. He began his farming career using horses and experienced the agricultural movement to modern machinery. He loved operating and maintaining his farm equipment, especially his new combine equipped with the latest GPS operating systems. He had a true passion for the land and his philosophy was to leave the land in better condition through proper soil and water conservation than when he originally found it. A number of years ago, he and his wife, Helen, entered an essay contest sponsored by Firestone Rubber Co., in which they described this philosophy and why they loved farming. The prize was a new pair of work gloves. They won the work gloves and later Firestone notified the couple their essay was the best in a five-state region and also awarded them a set of four agricultural tires for one of their tractors. In addition to a reverence for the land, Harley also loved working with wood. He built and used his own sawmill at the farm for more than 45 years. He was a member of Trinity Community Church, American Legion Post 257, and was a former 18-year member of the Loudonville Equity Board of Directors, former member of the Loudonville Fair Board and former member of the Ashland County Soil and Water Conservation Board. He is survived by his wife, Helen (née Motz) Heffelfinger, whom he married Nov. 24, 1948; his daughter, Lucinda (Jim) Pyers of rural Perrysville; his son, Douglas (Phyllis) Heffelfinger of rural Loudonville; along with four grandchildren, Ryan and Lindsey Pyers, and Emily and Andrea Heffelfinger; four great-grandchildren. Keegan and Gage Pyers, and Taylor and Morgan Sutter; and one brother, Wayne (Shirley) Heffelfinger of rural Loudonville. Services will take place 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, at Trinity Community Church with Pastor John Temple officiating. Private burial with military honors conducted by the American Legion and VFW will be in Loudonville Cemetery. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012, at Byerly-Lindsey Funeral Home, Loudonville.
