Harley William Brown, 45, a former Ottumwan and World war veteran, died at the Wabash railroad employes’ hospital at Decatur, Ill. last Saturday. He had been ill only a short period. Mr. Brown had been a patrolman for the Wabash railroad in the special service department at Decatur since 1923, the year he left Ottumwa. During the world war, Mr. Brown served with the Third Field Artillery in Texas. He also had served as first sergeant with the 12th Field Artillery during a 10-year period in the regular army. He was overseas in the war for 18 months. He was the son of Frank and Martha Brown and was born at Fairfield June 26, 1893. Before going to Decatur in 1923 he lived practically all his life in and near Ottumwa. He was a member of Bluffs lodge, No. 856, A.F. & A.M. at Bluffs, Ill., the Ansar Shrine at Springfield, Ill., the Wabash club of St. Louis, Mo. and the Consistory at Springfield, Ill. Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy Brown of Baltimore, Md.; a half sister, Mrs. Nellie Gruwell of Ottumwa, and three brothers, Ed, C.R. and L.R. Brown of Ottumwa. Services will be in Johnson’s funeral chapel Wednesday at 1 p.m., conducted by the Rev. A.D. McClure. Burial will be in the Shaul cemetery. Military and Masonic services will be held at the grave. Members of local Masonic orders will serve as pallbearers.
