Buchanan), Clara Elva - was born March 8, 1878, at Birmingham, Ia. She departed this life at her home in Fairfield, Iowa, April 28, 1921, aged 48 years, 1 month, 21 days. The deceased was the daughter of the late Frank and Martha Brown (sic. full given name of the father was Cornelius Frank Brown, and the mother, Martha Thompson Brown, a widow as/of 1898, remarried to Martin Van Buren Orman). Clara Elva Brown was the second of a family of six children (sic. evidently not including two infant but deceased siblings). Of this family survive, four brothers and a half-sister, Edward L., Charles R., Lawrence R., William H., Nellie Gruell (sic. Gruwell), all of Ottumwa, except Wm. H. of Baltimore, Md. Clara Elva Brown spent the days of her youth in Jefferson county, Ia. January 25, 1891, she was united in marriage to D. L. Buchanan of the same community. To this union were born eight sons and one daughter, two sons dying in childhood. Besides the bereft husband the surviving children are Raymond of Libertyville, Ia.; Verle (sic) of Stockport; Floyd, Albert, Harold and Melvin at home. For several years her health has been failing and for the past four months very (sic. illegible text) until death claimed her. Clara Elva Buchanan's friend and acquaintances are not confined to Fairfield alone, and wherever she was known has endearing friends. We will miss her welcome from our midst. She is dead, but her kindly greeting, loving smile and gentle handclasp will never be forgotten until time shall be no more. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in charge of Dr. C. L. Tennant. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery.
