LEROY EAGLE Those who knew Harmon Leroy Eagle were shocked and deeply pained when the message came across the wires on February 29, 1920 that he had departed this life on that day at his adopted home at Pocono, Pennsylvania. In response to a message to his mother and two brothers the week before conveying the intelligence that he was desperately ill of pneumonia following influenza they hastened to him. Where they remained until the end came and his, body was brought to his home at Doe Hill, Virginia and interred beside the grave of his father, Samuel C. Eagle, who preceded him nearly three years ago. Rev. G.W. Staples of Monterey, Virginia, preached the funeral in the absence of the pastor of McDowell & Doe Hill circuit, Rev. R.S. Snead. The floral display was large and beautiful, indicative of the esteem beheld for him by his relatives, friends and admirers. A crowd of people from far and near attended the burial services for Roy was admired and loved by all who knew him both in Highland county and in Pennsylvania where he spent most of his time and was in business during the latter part of his life. He was the oldest son of the late Samuel C. Eagle and Martha J. Eagle and is survived by his mother his wife, Mrs. Mary Lee Eagle, to whom he was married on April 2, 1912, by the following brothers: Russell M. of Bemis West Virginia, Josiah and Alfred students at the University of Virginia and Randolph at home also by two sisters, Mrs. R.S. Cecil of Dublin Virginia and Miss Martha, of Doe Hill and by one little daughter Mary Roth Eagle, six years old who now lives with her grandmother at her home in Highland. A brother, Rembert Eagle, while in military service of the United States was killed in France one year ago. A mother has lost an obedient and noble son, a daughter has lost a patient and devoted father, brothers and sisters have lost a devoted brother, Highland county has lost a son of whom she was justly proud, and his employer in Pennsylvania has lost, as he himself says, the best man he has ever had in his employ. And his body rests in the beautiful cemetery at his home near the historic bank of the James. Highland Recorder March 5, 1920 Another Highland Boy Gone H. LeRoy Eagle, son Mrs. Martha and the late Samuel C. Eagle, of Doe Hill, succumbed to an attack of influenza and pneumonia, at Pocono, Penn., his adopted home on Friday, Feb. 27th. His death came as the third great shock to his mother and surviving brothers and sisters within a comparatively short time, the father passing away something like three years ago to be soon followed by a son and brother, Rembert, who lost his life in the World War. Mr. Eagle had spent much of his time since early manhood away from his native county, and was married in Pennsylvania, his wife and one child surviving him. His mother, also survives and his living brothers and sisters are Mrs. Emma Cecil, of West Virginia, Miss Martha, for several years a member of the Monterey H.S. faculty and now a teacher in the Doe Hill graded school, Russel, of Bemis W. Va., Randolph, at home, Josiah and Alfred, students of the University of Virginia. The remains were brought to Doe Hill and laid to rest on Tuesday last Rev. G. W. Staples of Monterey, conducting the funeral service.
