Eagle at her adopted home in Staunton on Friday morning, December 24, was one of the sad events of the holiday season, robbing an erstwhile happy home of every semblance of joy and Christmas cheer. Mrs. Eagle was a native of Highland, and until recent months a lifelong resident of Doe Hill, Her maiden name was Karicofe and having lost her parents when a mere babe, she was the foster child of the late Mr. and Mrs. Josiah Armstrong. In 1879 she was united in marriage to Samuel C. Eagle who preceded her to the grave about ten years ago. The following children survive the mother: Mrs. Robert Cecil of Pulaski, Va., Rusell M. Eagle of Texas, Mrs. Lester Pope of Huntington, W.Va., Randolph Eagle of Staunton, Josiah and Alfred Eagle of Radford, Va. Two sons passed on before, Rembert dying while with the A.E.F, in France and LeRoy in Pennsylvania about seven years ago. All of her living children were with her during last illness. Mrs. Eagle was 66 years of age and had been identified with the M.E. Church, South since early girlhood her devotion to her church being equaled only by that to her family. **Highland Recorder January 7, 1927, page 3. IN MEMORYY OP MRS. MARTHA J. EAGLE The many friends and relatives of Mrs; Martha J. Eagle were grief stricken by the news of her death at her home in Staunton, Va., on December 24, 1926. She had been critically ill for nearly a month all of her children having been summoned to her bedside and on the eve of the Blessed Christmas Season she went home to her heavenly father and the loved ones on the other side. Mrs. Eagle, a native and almost life-long resident of Highland county was one of the most gifted and best beloved women of the county. She was born on August 3, 1860 at Doe Hill, Va., the only daughter of George Madison and Margaret Ann Kiracofe. When she was ten years old, she united with the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and henceforth was a consecrated member. For more than fifty years, she took an active part in every phase of church and community work in Doe Hill, and when she moved to Staunton a few months ago, she immediately identified herself with the life of Central Methodist Church so completely that the whole church mourns today over her passing. On December 10th, 1879, she was happily united in marriage to the late Samuel C. Eagle, and of this union were born six sons, Russell M., of Carmona, Texas; J. Randolph of Staunton, Va,; Josiah A. and Alfred K. of Radford, Va.; by two daughters, Mrs. R.S. Cecil of Pulaski, Va.; and Mrs. Lester Pope of Huntington, W.Va. and by nine grandchildren, one of whom, Mary Roth Eagle, having made her home with her grandmother almost since babyhood ...
