STERLING DIED SATURDAY Mr. Harold E. Sterling, one of the city's well known business men and political leaders, died at his home on Chesepeake Avenue extended Saturday morning, after an illness of several months, at the age of 55 years. He was born in this community in 1893, the son of the late Riley and Lillian Mason Sterling. As a young man Mr. Sterling operated a feed store here. Then he relocated to New York city and became superintendent of a construction company which did work in many parts of the east. He stayed with that concern for a number of years, and then about 15 years ago he returned to Crisfield, and with his brother, William, opened a filling station and accessories store on Main Street. He was the owner of several valuables parcels of real estate in the business section on which he erected store and apartment buildings. Interested in politics, Mr. Sterling was a Republican leader with a large following. He served four years as Deputy Sheriff under Sheriff Fred Phoebus, and made an excellent record in that office. Courteous and friendly, Mr. Sterling owed his business success to these qualities and to his energy in conducting business. He was held in high regard and esteem by a large circle of friends and acquaintances, who were sincerely grieved at his death. Some months ago his health began to fail and for about two months before his death he was confined to his home. Until illness compelled his retirement, he was at his place of business daily, where he gave his careful attention to its details and greeted his customers with the a warmth of friendship and desire to be of service they had come to expect from him. His body reposed at the Bradshaw Funeral Parlors, where long lines of people passed his bier to pay their respects until Monday afternoon, when funeral services were held in Immanuel Methodist church, conducted by Dr. Melvin E. Wheatley, pastor, and Dr. J. Yancey Fincher. Interment was in the family lot in Crisfield cemetery. Bearers were J. Coyne Sterling, Fred N. Holland, Wells Marshall, J. Millard Tawes, Carlton Massey and Paul Ayres. There was an unusually large array of lovely floral pieces banking the casket, beautiful testimony of the affection and esteem in which he was generally held. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Cynthia Lankford Sterling, one son, Harold E. Sterling. Jr., owner and operator of the Plantation Night Club, one brother, William Sterling, who was his business partner, two sisters, Mrs. Christian Waldman of Ferndale, Md., and Mrs. King Miller of Princess Anne, and two grandchildren.
