Description	:	HAROLD FRANCIS SHIRES Harold Shires was born on a farm north of Red Oak, Iowa on February 26, 1901 and passed away at his home near Nodaway January 25, 1959. He was a member and Past... Read More	HAROLD FRANCIS SHIRES Harold Shires was born on a farm north of Red Oak, Iowa on February 26, 1901 and passed away at his home near Nodaway January 25, 1959. He was the son of Frank and Emma Kate Baker Shires. On January 22, 1922, he was united in marriage to Leota Myrtle Buchanan and to this union one son, Donald, was born. Harold was active in all community affairs. He united with the Methodist Church when a young boy and has always been an active and faithful member, serving well in many capacities. He was a member and Past Master of Iriquois Lodge, A.P. & A.M. No. 590 of Nodaway and Emblem Chapter No. 64, Order of the Eastern Star of Corning. For a number of years served on the school board and at the present time was treasurer. Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Leota, son, Donald, daughter-in-law, Hallene and three grandsons, Bob, Myron, and Kenneth, who were the pride of his life. Donald and family living at Prescott, Iowa. He also leaves one sister, Leta Youngberg of Red Oak and one brother, Lester of Elliott, Iowa and a number of nieces and nephews. The shires home was alway open to friends, especially young people. Several boys have lived in their home and finished school in Nodaway. He was “Pop” to them. Funeral services were held from the Nodaway methodist church conducted by Rev. Verne Weigel, pastor, on January 31, at 2 p.m., and burial was in the Nodaway Cemetery. The Masonic order had a part in the services. Pall bearers were Gilbert Rider, Will O’Riley, Earl Goldsmith, Walter Frey, LeRoy Scott, Clarence Strain, Merle Brown, and Dale Stalder, with Leonard Cooney and Harold O’Riley as alternates. Music was by Robert Dunn, soloist, who sand, “In The Garden” and “Beyond The Sunset” with Mrs Carl Johnson as accompanist. Flower bearers were Mrs. Florence Watt and Mrs. Beverly O’Riley. A memorial fund has been set up in honor of Mr. Shires and contributions may be sent to Dale Strait in Nodaway. The fund will be used to help purchase an electric organ for the church.
