Clarence Moore officiating. Pall bearers included James Haley, Harold O’Riley, Bill Forsythe, LeRoy Scott, Don Scanlon, and Carl Johnson. Flower bearers were Mr. and Mrs. Earl Goldsmith. Leota Myrtle Buchanan, daughter of Andrew Jackson Buchanan and Phoebe Clementine Burdick, was born July 6, 1902 in Montgomery County, Iowa and departed this life, Friday, April 12, 1968 at Northgate Manor at the age of 65 years, 9 months, and 6 days. Leota was educated int he Montgomery County Schools and graduated from the Red Oak High School. She was united in married Harold Francis Shires on January 22, 1922 in Adams County, Iowa. They left the Stennett Community in 1942 after purchasing their Nodaway farm and lived there until Harold’s death on January 28, 1959. To this union one son, Donald, was born. The shires home was alway open to friends, especially young people. Several boys have lived in their home and finished school in Nodaway. On May 5, 1963 in Nodaway, Iowa she married Gilbert Rider, who survives her. Besides her husband and son, Don, she is survived by her daughter-in-law, Hallene and three grandsons, Bob, Myron, and Kenneth, tow granddaughters-in-law, Dee and Jan, and five great grandchildren, Darwin, Donna, Debbie, Wendy, and Bobby. Other survivors are her brother, Wallace Buchanan of Red Oak and Ralph of Oregon and two sisters, Grace Blue of Red Oak and Mrs. Chancey (Agnes) Woodin of Centerville, besides a host of relatives and friends. Just as a stained glass window grows more beautiful in the light, so Mom , as she was endearingly called by young and old, shone in her love and service to those about her. With young people as a special love, she taught their Sunday School Class, helped with choir, and was a 4-H leader. She was a loyal and devoted member of the Nodaway Methodist Church, WSCS, Easter Star, Legion Auxiliary, local and county and Farm Bureau.
