Description	:	Harold Howard Upshaw, formerly of Shingle Springs, Ca. Passed away on Sunday May 16, 2010, in Chico, Ca. Harold has passed from death into life (John 5:24). The oldest of 7 children born to Lewis and Minnie Florence Upshaw of Sapulpa, OK. Harold learned at an early age, how to work, and how to serve his Lord Jesus Christ. He graduated for Sapulpa in... Read More	Harold Howard Upshaw, formerly of Shingle Springs, Ca. Passed away on Sunday May 16, 2010, in Chico, Ca. Harold has passed from death into life (John 5:24). The oldest of 7 children born to Lewis and Minnie Florence Upshaw of Sapulpa, OK. Harold learned at an early age, how to work, and how to serve his Lord Jesus Christ. During the depression years, Harold supplemented the family income by working in the school cafeteria, delivering the Sapulpa Daily Herald, and setting pins at the local bowling alley, while carrying a full load in school. He graduated for Sapulpa in High 1941, and maintained the friendships of childhood through his life. Harold enlisted in the US Navy in 1942, and was educated as a machinist mate in Brainerd, Minnesota. Serving aboard the USS Carter Hall, a landing Ship Dock, he saw action in the Pacific Theatre, including kamikaze attacks on fleets, where he manned a 20mm gun. On leave in California, a buddy set up a blind date with Mary Martha Wall of Sacramento. After a courtship that included numerous air letters, and (when on leave) dates using a friend's Model A, Harold and Mary were married on February 22, 1945. Harold received an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1946, and entered the building trades, becoming a journeyman plumber for Ray O Cook Plumbing Co. of Sacramento. Using his wood shop education from High School Harold built three homes during his career. A move to Auburn, Ca and then Shingle Springs, Ca allowed him to establish H H Upshaw Plumbing Co., where he independently contracted his plumbing services to the mountain counties area for 20 years. Later Harold went to work for the Ca Dept of Corrections, working in several state prisons, including Folsom Prison. Harold served in the board of elders in each church he was a part of, beginning with Town and Country Church of Christ in Sacramento, and ending at Placerville First Christian Church. A diligent student of the God's word, Harold was noted for his Bible knowledge and teaching. Family was always a priority in Harold and Mary's lives, which meant frequent trips to Oklahoma, camping with family and friends, vacationing at the cabin in Butte Meadows. On his retirement Harold tool classes in Lapidary work and became know for his skills in creating bolo ties, clocks of slice stone, and ladies jewelry. Mary proudly displayed all these to one and all. Harold also became involved with the Senior Gleaners of Placerville area and became known as "The Muffin Man" as he distributed surplus baked goods. Never one to let things go to waste, Harold took his responsibilities to heart. Harold had a wealth of poetry memorized from his school days, and was known for his ready wit, funny songs and stories. Harold and Mary moved to Orland in 2007 to be near their children and extended family, and have been the only married couple in residence at WestHaven Assisted Living, participating in all activities. Harold is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Mary, now of Orland, Ca; son, Frank Upshaw (Ginger) of Red Bluff; daughter, Karen Toney (George) of Orland; sister, Helen Croy (Otis) of Yuba City; brother, Lester Upshaw (Betty) of Oklahoma City, OK; grandchildren, David Toney (Stephanie) of Orland, Ami Joiner (Steve) of Redding, Elizabeth Toney of Sacramento, Kyle, Courtney and Jason Upshaw of Red Bluff; great grandchildren, Keandra and Jenalyn Joiner of Redding, and Conley Toney of Orland. Harold leaves numerous family members and friends and will be lovingly remembered for his strength of character and sharp wit. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff and caregivers of WestHaven Living for their loving, considerate care of Harold and Mary. We can never thank you enough. A Memorial services will be held Saturday May 22, at 2:00 p.m. at the F.D. Sweet & Sons Funeral Home, Orland, and a reception to follow at the Farm Bureau building. Committal service at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery, Igo, Ca. will be Tuesday May 25, 2010. Memorial donations in Harold's name may be made to Gideon's International or Wycliffe Bible Translators. Published by Willows Journal from May 19 to May 26, 2010.
