Roudebush, a resident of this city and county for the past fifty years. He passed away at St. Clare hospital following several months of illness. Death was caused by cancer. Harold J. Roudebush was born Feb. 9, 1886, in Markle, Indiana, the son of Christian and Fedelia Roudebush. He spent his early life and attended high school at Markle. Following graduation he entered the Huntington, Indiana, business university and graduated in 1905. He then went to Chicago where he worked as auditor for the Burlington railroad for five years. In 1910 he joined his brother, Tom Roudebush, and they came to Fort Benton and took up homesteads in Pleasant Valley. On Dec. 14, 1911, he was united in marriage to Eva Iddings in Merrillville, Indiana. Returning to Montana they lived on the homestead until 1917 when they moved to Fort Benton to make their home and have since resided in this city. Mr. Roudebush was employed in the office of Harry C. Donaldson, city clerk. In 1920 and 1922 he was elected as county auditor of Chouteau county. In Nov. 1924, he was elected clerk of the district court and continued to serve in that office until his retirement on June 1, 1959, because of ill health. He was unopposed for the office in 1928 and also in the last three times that he ran for office. On Jan. 1st of this year he completed 34 years in the office for the longest term of continuous service in one elective office of any present county officer and probably one of the longest in the state. Mr. and Mrs. Roudebush spent last year in Arizona in the hopes of benefitting his health and had planned to return there this winter before he was stricken with his last illness. He was a member of the First Christian Church of this city, and for a number of years sang in the church choir. He was a member of Benton Lodge No. 25 A. F. & A. M. and served as master of the lodge in 1931 and for a number of years as secretary; a member of the I. O. O. F. lodge No. 59, and served as noble grand in 1930; a member of Fort Benton Kiwanis Club for a number of years and attended the International convention six different times as delegate from the local club. He always took an active part in any civic enterprise and enjoyed that kind of activity. Harold is survived by his wife, Eva, and the following children: Mrs. Virginia Wilson, of Deer Lodge; Mrs. Edith Ray, of Carter; Harold Roudebush, Jr., of Carter; Hilton Roudebush, of Geraldine; Mrs. Irene Zanto, of Highwood. One son, Ralph, passed away at the age of 13 in 1936. Fourteen grandchildren also survive as does one brother, LaRue Roudebush, of Huntington, Indiana. Four brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
