Description	:	Harold L. Weller, age 92, of Chapman, Kansas, passed away on January 1, 2018 at Geary Community Hospital, Junction City, Kansas. Harold was born on November 25, 1925 to Howard V. and Esther F. (Schwab) Weller. He attended local schools and graduated from DCCHS in Chapman. Weller, age 92, of Chapman, Kansas, passed away on January 1, 2018 at Geary Community Hospital, Junction City, Kansas. Harold was born on November 25, 1925 to Howard V. and Esther F. (Schwab) Weller. He attended local schools and graduated from DCCHS in Chapman. Shortly after graduating, Harold served his country in World War II as part of the 9th Armored Division of the Army. He left home for war on Christmas Eve in 1944. The first battle he fought in was the infamous Battle of the Bulge. His division was also the first to cross the Rhine at Remagen where they created a bridgehead, which allowed hundreds of thousands of Allied troops to cross. They hung a sign that said, "Cross the Rhine with dry feet - courtesy of the 9th Armored Division." The 9th's feat in creating the bridgehead saved a minimum of 5,000 American dead and 10,000 wounded. A few weeks later he was wounded in battle, earning him the Purple Heart. He returned to action after a week or two and fought until August of 1945 when he was shipped home for a 30-day leave, after which he was to be sent to the South Pacific. When he got off the train in Abilene, a large crowd had gathered celebrating the surrender of Japan. He was able to finish out his term in the States and did not have to return overseas. In addition to the Purple Heart, Harold received the Good Conduct Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge and the European Theater Medal with three Bronze Stars. After serving in the military Harold returned home to the family farm. He married Phyllis McCosh on September 14, 1947. Harold worked on the family farm until the early 70’s. He then moved to Hutchison where he worked for the Cessna Fluid Division and Collins Manufacturing. After retiring, he returned home to Chapman to be closer to his family and friends. After Phyllis’ death, he later married Eloise McIntyre Caughron. He was active in his community and was involved with the American Legion, Lions Club, Elks, and the Eagles. In his later years he enjoyed his time at the Senior Center socializing and playing cards and bingo. Harold also had a special place in his heart for his four-legged friends. Survivors include his son, Greg Weller and his wife Cecilia of Chapman, Kansas, son Terry Weller; daughter Wendy Weller and husband Paul Van Ryn; stepson Jay Caughron; grandson Chad Weller, of Chapman, Kansas and granddaughter, Amy Liebau and her husband Judd, of Chapman, Kansas, and grandsons Kyle and Wesley Weller. In addition he had four great grandchildren, Megan Weller, Chance and Camden Liebau and Colton Bell all of Chapman, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Esther Weller, wife Phyllis (McCosh) Weller, wife Eloise McIntyre Caughron and stepdaughter Gilda Marshall. There will be a visitation on Sunday, January 7 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at Londeen Funeral Chapel, 206 W. 5th St, Chapman, KS. Funeral service will be Monday, January 8 at 10:00 a.m. at the Alida-Upland Cooperative Church, Junction City, KS, followed by burial at the Liberty Cemetery west of Upland.
