Description	:	Harold Roy Volkmann, 81, of Wichita, grandfather of Tim and Marlena Volkmann of Wichita, died Jan. 30, 2004. Service was Feb. 2 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with Rev. Butch Lambert officiating. Memorial service was Feb. 3 at the United Methodist Church in Clay Center. Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery in Clay Center. Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery in Clay Center. He was born May 13, 1922, at Lyons, the son of Albert Volkmann and Ida Schmidt. He graduated from Lyons High School, and earned an electrical engineering degree in 1944 at Kansas State University. He married Betty Mugler on Nov. 30, 1944. They lived in Clay Center for 22 years, where they raised their sons, Allan and John Eric "Jack." Harold served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Signal Corps during World War II. He worked as Clay Center superintendent of utilities for 22 years. After moving to Wichita, he was a sales engineer for General Electric Co. until retiring in 1987. He was president of the Kansas Association of Municipal Utilities and Tri-Valley Engineering Society, chair of the Kansas Section of American Water Works Association, a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and served a decade on the Wichita Board of Electrical Appeals. He was preceded in death by his wife; son, Jack, sisters, Lillian, Alberta and Vera; and a brother, Roy. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Allan and Glynda Volkmann of Wichita; brother, Harley Volkmann of Great Bend; grandsons and their spouses, Eric and Mary Volkmann of Wichita, Todd Volkmann of Seattle; and five great-grandchildren. Memorials have been established with Aldersgate United Methodist Church, and United Methodist Church of Clay Center.
