In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Harold and June Burdick Memorial Scholarship, established for non-traditional students attending WNCC. Holechek Funeral Home in Oshkosh is in charge of the arrangements. Harold was born to Fred and Ruby Fern (Pierce) Burdick on February 15, 1922, in the little house south of the Lewellen Methodist Church, which belonged to his Aunt Stella at the time. He grew up on the family farm north of Lewellen, and completed the eighth grade at District 38. He graduated from the Lewellen Rural High School in 1940 and hired out for farm work in the area until he enlisted in the United States Air Force on November 6, 1942. He spent 44 months in the service, at 15 different bases, taking his Basic Training at Shepherd Field, Wichita Falls, Texas; Basic Pilot Training at Independence, Kansas; Gunnery Training at Matagorda Island, Texas; completed the Cadet Training Program, and received his fighter pilot wings and Second Lieutenant's Commission at Foster Field, Victoria, Texas, Feb. 1, 1945. He flew the P-40, called the Flying Tiger plane, the P-51 and the P-47. He served as an instructor for advanced pilot training, and was stationed at Lincoln, Nebraska, waiting an assignment overseas, when the war in Europe ended. He was discharged from the Air Force at Sheridan Field, Chicago, Illinois, on August 6, 1946. Returning to Lewellen, he engaged in farming for himself, and on June 8, 1947, was married to June Marie Smith at the North Platte Methodist Church. They lived on a farm north east of Lewellen for two years, and then lived on the Clarence Reed farm south of Lewellen for five years. In 1953, they bought the George Post farm northwest of Lewellen, eventually acquiring other property in the neighborhood. They purchased a ranch from Godfrey Pierce in 1969. Harold semi-retired from farming and ranching in 1990 but remained involved with the operation helping with equipment operation and lots of "goephering". One of his great passions was operating a combine and was still atop a John Deere "6600" until the year 2000 at the age of 78. Harold and June helped establish the Lewellen youth center, worked with scout groups, and assisted with 4-H activities for several years. Harold served on the Garden County CO-OP board of directors, the Lewellen Grade School board, and the Irrigation District Boards. He served on the FHA Board, and has been a past member of the Elk's Lodge #1760, the Nebraska Wheat Growers, and Nebraska Cattlemen's Association. Harold and June became charter members of the Ash Hollow Oldtimer's Round-Up Inc. In 1982, helping to organize the annual bus trips to the National Oldtimer's Rodeo finals in Amarillo, Texas. Throughout the years, they vacationed in Mexico, the Hawaiian Islands, and the Caribbean. Their greatest enjoyment probably came from their weekly Saturday night rendezvous with a dozen or more of their friends for dinner and a little dancing. He lost his dance partner in October of 2000 and subsequent health issues slowed the drive to some extent, but not the spirit. Still doing some "goephering" for the operation, he became content to converse with passers-by about the regions history, the issues facing agriculture, and if time permitted, his WWII flying experiences and his P-51 Mustang. Known to be "slightly" opinionated, with a zest for kidding everyone about something, he will be missed by a host of friends and family. Survivors include his son, Bruce and wife Ellen Burdick of Lewellen; daughter, Marianne and husband Gary Fisher of Gurley; grandchildren, Dawn and husband Gene Valdez of Alliance, Gene and wife Brenda Tophoj of Oshkosh, and Kim Tophoj of Ft. Morgan, CO; great-grandchildren, Damian and Makayla Valdez and McKenzie and Brady Tophoj; and two sisters-in-law, Jean States of North Platte and Fern Burdick of Richland, Missouri; special friend, Ed Bittner of Torrington, Wyo.; and many friends, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife June in 2000; brother, Wayne Burdick; brother-in-law, Dr. Jerry States; and his parents.
