Mrs. Carpenter passed away on Tuesday morning, August 31, at the Phillips County Hospital where she was taken on July 23 following a stroke suffered at her home. She was 86 years of age and had lived in Phillips County for 63 years. As Harriet A. Kitchel, one of seven children of James and Elizabeth Kitchel, Mrs. Carpenter was born July 7, 1870, near Hannibal, Missouri. In early childhood she moved with her parents to Nebraska and the family established residence near Ragan. In 1887 Mrs. Carpenter was united in marriage to Hannibal L. Carpenter. They came to Phillips County in 1893, homesteading seven miles east of Holyoke and residing there for many years. To this union were born 10 children, two of whom, Elnora, Mrs. George Sorensen, and Edith, Mrs. Cecil Critchlow, preceded their mother in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband. Surviving Mrs. Carpenter are three sons, Clarence Carpenter of Wyoming, and Albert and Arthur Carpenter, both of Holyoke; five daughters, Miss Ada Carpenter of Holyoke, with whom Mrs. Carpenter had made her home most of the time for the past 15 years, Dora, Mrs. Clarence Vernon, Carrie, Mrs. John Baskins, and Etta, Mrs. Fred Peterson, all of Holyoke, and Nannie, Mrs. O.A. Augenbaugh of Brighton; one sister, who lives in Oregon; 23 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. Out-of-town relatives who attended the funeral included the following: Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Augenbaugh and Mrs. John Augenbaugh and children of Brighton; Norman Augenbaugh, Arnold Kinsey and Mrs. Lloyd Kehr of Denver; Mr. and Mrs. William Schwordfiger and daughters, Douglas, Wyoming; Clarence Carpenter and Mr. and Mrs. D.B. Allsup, Manville, Wyoming; Mrs. Wilma Carlson and children, Wheatland, Wyoming; Mrs. Chester Dodson and children, Fort Collins; Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Vernon, Greeley; Mr. and Mrs. Orley Bheam, Peetz, and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Kitchel, Ogallala, Nebraska.
