Community Shocked and Saddened By Untimely Demise of One of City's Most Popular Young Matrons One of the saddest happenings of the year occurred on Saturday night in the sudden death of Mrs. Harriet Bemus Jaap, wife of John Jaap and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Bemis. While Mrs. Jaap had been afflicted with a lesion of the heart since infancy, which compelled her withdrawal from school for more or less periods, still her health had been of the best recently and no apprehension had been felt by the immediate family concerning her. She was active in the work of the Pythian Sisters, the Episcopal Guild and had recently done much work toward the success of their activities. Death came unlooked for and without the slightest warning, without suffering, just as though she had fallen asleep. She and her husband had retired for the night. She lay reading a magazine until she was drowsy, then remembering that she had not wound the clock, she asked Mr. Jaap to wind it. These were the last words she spoke. Mr. Jaap was just dropping off when he heard a noise as of someone choking. He switched on the light and saw something serious was happening to his wife. He telephoned for the doctor and his parents-in-law. The doctor and Mr. and Mrs. Bemis arrived soon but Harriet Jaap had passed away. The deceased was born in Belt, June 22, 1896, and had passed her whole life in this vicinity. She was married in Oct. 1916. She is survived by her husband, John Jaap; her parents, R.H. Bemis; a five-year-old son, Ralph Jaap; a sister, Elsie Jaap; and a brother, Lt. John Bemis, United States army stationed at Norfolk, Va. She was a graduate of the local high school, class of 1915, and her scholarship was of high order. She was of a genial disposition and was possessed of a quaint droll humor which brightened the day for her associates. Because of the small seating capacity of the St. Luke Episcopal church, the funeral was held in the auditorium on Wednesday afternoon. The auditorium was crowded to overflowing, man unable to find standing room. All the bereaved family, including the small son, Ralph, have the sincerest sympathy of our people whose chief desire is to express in some way their sorrow and regret
