Poland ---------- DIED POLAND. In Spirit Lake, at midnight, October 2d, Mrs. Harriet E. Poland, aged 58 years and 12 days. Another Christian mother sainted; another weary pilgrim gone home to eternal rest. She did her earthly-work nobly, and helpfully. When all other have forgotten the faithfulness with which she applied herself under all circumstances, her children will bear testimony to the loyalty, the patience, the strength and the loving kindness manifest all through this earthly career. Few mothers do so much, and are to their children as was this mother to hers. No burden was too heavy, no sacrifice to great where their interests were involved, and the measure of this influence and this helpfulness will never be correctly estimated on earth. The real worth of these gentle, loyal mothers little realized while they continue in their work. In the end their departure means so much that time and circumstance never affords adequate compensation for their loss. Harriet E. McKnight was born in Batavia, New York. At Collins, in that state, she was married to Sherburne Poland, March 11, 1853. The family moved to Minnesota in 1861, and to Spirit Lake in 1881. Mrs. Poland did not seek wide acquaintance, but in the circle where her merits were understood she was always beloved. Uniting with the M. E. Church in 1861. she lead a consistent Christian life, and died with the name of her Savior on her lips. She has suffered much in the sickness leading unto the end. Rheumatism was for years a relentless foe. About a year ago symptoms denoted the presence of a more deadly enemy. For four months she was in the Sanitarium at Battle Creek, and for weeks was given hope of recovery, but it was not so to be, and the distressed woman came home last month to die. The end came and found her ready for the change. An aged husband mourns the loss of the bride of his youth and the solace of his declining years. Two daughters and three sons are within the shadow of a heavy sorrow. Though the weather was inclement, the M. E. Church was filled with sympathizing friends on a brief announcement of the funeral. The sermon was by Rev. C. E. Freeman, and Dr. F. H. Sanderson assisted in the solemn service.
