Toppled Into Ditch The car then toppled into the nearby drainage ditch where Mrs. Vance and her fellow passengers, Mrs. Leroy Bass, 57, and Arthur Hanson, 49, were all thrown out. Mr. Hanson was reported in critical condition today with possible internal injuries, and it was thought he might have to undergo surgery. Mrs. Bass was reported in fair condition. She is suffering from possible back injuries and x-rays were scheduled to be taken during the day. Patrolman Hogan said the accident occurred at 6:40 last evening at which time it was raining and visibility was poor. The three Stratford residents were just a mile from their homes to which they were returning after having worked at the Centeral Co-op Turkey Producers plant in Ellsworth. Another motorist, Gordon Hutchinson of Duncombe was coming along the highway at the time and reported the accident, Patrolman Hogan said. All three persons were tossed out of the demolished auto into about two inches of water on top of the ice in the drainage ditch, Hogan said. It was reported that the impact of the crash cut the automobile's gasoline tank in two and gas was thrown over the three persons. The car did not catch fire, but Hanson reportedly suffered from gas burns. Mr. Hanson was taken to Hamilton County Hospital by Webster City fireman in the county emergency rescue unit and Mrs. Bass was taken to the hospital by a Stratford ambulance. Mrs. Vance's death marked the sixth fatality of 1964 in Hamilton County, according to Sheriff E.R. Lear. Services on Monday Funeral services for Mrs. Vance will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Lutheran Church in Stratford with the Rev. Robert W. Carlson and with burial in Oakwood Cemetery at Stratford. The body will lie in state at the Foster Funeral Home until 9:30 Monday morning when it will be taken to the church. Harriet Fay Bjornson daughter of Ben and Eva Bjornson, ws born Jan. 19, 1930, on a farm near Dayton. She was reared and educated in the Dayton community. She was united in marriage Jan. 29, 1948, to James Vance and the couple had always since resided in the Dayton-Stratford communities. She is survived by her husband, one daughter and one son, Connie Fay and James Jr., both at home; two step-daughters, Mary and Sue Vance; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Bjornson of Dayton; three brothers, Maurice Bjornson of Dayton, a twin brother, Harold Bjornson of Culver City, Calif., and Melvin (Bud) Bjornson, Waterloo; three half sisters and a half brother, Mrs. Phil Adams, Fort Dodge, Mrs. Vivian Carlson, Dayton, Mrs. Walter Brockman, Long Beach, Calif., and Verl Eklund, San Bernardino, Calif., and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son who died in infancy.
