She was born July 14, 1850, in Nashau, N.H., and was married July 21, 1866 to Warren Martin, of Iroquois County, Illinois. Eight children were born of this union, namely: Hattie Mae, Helen Abbie, Cora Ann, Lotta Agnes, John Ladd, Warren Leroy, Julia Edith and Myrtle Ruth. She was married a second time to C. H. Calkins, of Gage County Nebraska, June 10, 1887, and of this union were born three children, namely: C. H. Calkins, Jr., Ray J., and Leslie Washington, all of whom are living. Mrs. Calkins was a woman of rare excellence and many virtues. As a wife and mother, she represented the purest and best of that hallowed relation. She was an affectionate wife and loving mother; always contented with life as it came. Her life was an inspiration of encouragement for her children. Her life's aim was to make her home to all around whom she wove such a happy influence. Her disposition was gentle and lovable, and she was happiest when she could do good and minister to the happiness of others. She bore her long illness without complaint or murmur, to enter into the reward of a good and faithful servant. She leaves behind her the record of a noble life and one that will be lovingly cherished by her bereaved family. The Democrat extends sincere sympathy to the bereaved family, in their great loss of wife and mother.
