Oct 6, 1969 - Carroll Daily Times - Harriet Marie Anderson of Carroll, a partner in the Anderson Shoe Store and former society editor of The Carroll Daily Times Herald, died at St. Anthony Hospital Saturday night after a long illness. She was 74. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Dahn-Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll, with interment in the Carroll City Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. D. Merle Hill, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, with which Miss Anderson was affiliated. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7:30 p.m. Monday. Miss Anderson ended a long and distinguished newspaper career in Carroll when she retired on Aug. 29, 1959. She began her work in 1929 as a reporter for the Carroll Times and joined the staff of The Carroll Daily Times Herald in 1936. She probably had a wider acquaintance than anyone in the city, built up through years of work on society and local news. She had chronicled the life histories of thousands of persons from birth, through marriage and death. In addition to reporting society news during her 23 years with The Carroll Daily Times Herald, Miss Anderson wrote most of the obituaries that appeared in the newspaper and a wide variety of other items of local interest. As "state editor" she also edited the large amount of news sent in by correspondents in other communities within the newspaper's circulation area. Miss Anderson was born May 2, 1895 in Carroll, a daughter of Louis T and Mary Anderson. She lived here all her life and attended public schools, graduating from Carroll High School and also from a secretarial course at St. Angela Academy. After her high school graduation she worked for the Iowa Public Service Company and for a time was a secretary for the firm of Lee and Robb, attorneys. She was a member of Signet Chapter No. 1, Order of the Eastern Star, and of the Carroll Wa-tan-ye Club. Surviving an a sister, Mrs. J. Henry (Carrie) Boettger of Rocky Ford, Colo.; a niece, Mrs. Max H. Reed of Carroll; three nephews and three great nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters, Louis, John, Harry, Margaret and Minnie Anderson. The family suggests that friends so desiring may contribute to the American Cancer Society or to the building fund of the new St. Anthony Regional Hospital in memory of Miss Anderson.
