Southeastern Montana native daughter and old friend and neighbor Harriet Patricia "Patsy" LaFlamme passed away early Saturday morning of March 3, 2007 at Powder River Manor, where she had resided for the past several years. She was born on October 5, 1926 at Ekalaka, the daughter of Samuel and Marie Kortum-Penn, who had a place near the Chalk Buttes. She was one of three children, Albert "Bud" and Sharon (Sorenson) Penn. Patsy attended grade and high school at Ekalaka, before continuing on to Normal School at Billings. She received a special certificate to teach at age 17. She returned to Ekalaka and taught at various Carter County rural schools, riding horse back to and from school each day. She and Millard LaFlamme were married on March 12, 1946, along with friends Stub and Gladys Askin, at Baker. After their marriage, Patsy quit teaching, and worked for the Carter County ASCS Office. She was also clerk for the Carter County Fair, and helped the county superintendent with eighth grade examinations. She also helped operate the lab for the Montana Department of Livestock while Millard tested cattle for brucellosis. Their two children, Wade and Penny, were born at Ekalaka, Wade on May 24, 1953 and Penny on November 5, 1958. In May of 1959 they moved to Broadus, where Millard hired on with the Federal Government as trapper to control predators. Millard went to work as Deputy Sheriff in Powder River County in 1971. He was elected sheriff of the county in 1978, retiring from office after one term. Patsy kept the National Weather Observatory in Broadus for 30 years. She faithfully reported the weather four times daily, mornings and nights at 10:30 and 4:30 throughout those years. She also sold Avon products for 25 years. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Broadus VFW Post 1595, and was also a member of the local garden club. Every year she raised a huge garden and canned the produce. She also loved to hunt. The last deer she killed, she took with a fine running shot through the neck. She and Millard would have celebrated their sixty-first wedding anniversary on March 12. She was a devoted and faithful wife, mother and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Survivors include her husband Millard of Broadus; one son, Wade, also of Broadus; daughter Penny of Miles City; grandchildren Connie (Tim) Hunt of Broadus and Joey and Jason of Miles City, three great-grandchildren, Isaac, Larry and Mason Hunt, and sister, Sharon (Marlan) Sorenson of Bismarck, ND; sister-in-law, Areatha Penn of Ekalaka. MT. She was preceded in death by her parents, and Brother Bud. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at the chapel of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Broadus. A luncheon will follow at the Broadus VFW Hall. Burial will be follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Beaver Lodge Cemetery in Ekalaka. Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
