Harriet Kay was born May 27, 1940, on the family farm northwest of Wolbach to Harry and Viola (Petersen) Larson. Harriet Kay attended Mid-way country school and Wolbach High School. Kay married Bernard Leroy Yax at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wolbach on Nov. 24, 1957. To this union were born three children, Liz, Becky and Tim. The couple first lived in the sandhills on a ranch outside of Ericson. They later moved to Grand Island. Kay was a full time mom, she raised her children, transported them back and forth to Blessed Sacrament grade school and gave of her time to her family, school and church. The family spent the summer of 1970 in Bushnell, near the Wyoming line. Bernard was working to connect the interstate from Nebraska to Wyoming. The summer was spent road tripping into Cheyenne for Frontier Days, into the Rocky Mountains and keeping one eye open for rattlesnakes. In 1971, the family moved to Yax's mini-ranch northwest of Cushing. The family raised hogs and began Spring Creek Kennels. Kay worked outside of the home as a house cleaner, assistant for Marilyn Preisendorf's catering jobs and also worked at Marilyn's restaurant, Dazzle Dogs. Kay was proud of her Scandinavian heritage and in 1987 had the opportunity to travel to Sweden and Denmark. She also enjoyed visiting Nashville and Branson, attending Mel Tillis and Sawyer Brown concerts and experiencing the Grand Ole Opry backstage. Kay was a devout Catholic and had a special devotion to Mary and her rosary. She enjoyed watching EWTN and was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic church where she served as a Eucharistic minister and was a long time member of the Catholic Daughters. Harriet Kay enjoyed spending time with her family. She helped for many years at Miss Lizzie's Boardin' House, her daughter Liz's tearoom. She also helped take care of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her aging parents. Harriett Kay enjoyed a good game of "crap on your neighbor," black licorice, Hunan's Princess Chicken and Willie Skala's polka show! She did not like smoked salmon or any pickled herring despite her Scandinavian background! She was a charter member of the Howard County Intoxicated Secret Monthly Brunch Club, always a member in good standing. Harriet Kay loved animals, especially cats. She enjoyed entertaining and always set a beautiful table. She was known for her prime rib dinners complete with her beautiful china and a bottle of red wine. Her family and friends recently surprised her on her 70th birthday with an authentic Swedish smorgasbord. Guests enjoyed the celebration, raising their glasses to "skal" Kay in a celebratory toast. Harriet Kay leaves to mourn, her children, Liz and spouse, Terry King, of Bradshaw, Becky Fisher and Rocke Jurzenski of St. Paul: a son, Tim Yax of Grand Island; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Rother, Laura Cammack and spouse, Nick, Michael and fiance, Jackie, Misti and spouse, Pat, Ayrisa Schuller and Anna and Rachel King; eight great-grandchildren, Amnesty and JaKayia Kelley, Madaline and Sebastian Cammack, Rylyn Yax, Morgan and Kaleb, and Dason Schuller; one sister, Carol Switzer and spouse, Wayne, of Grand Island and a brother, Dick Larson and spouse, Janet, of Grand Island. She also leaves to mourn several cousins, nieces, nephews, good friends and neighbors. She is preceded in death by Bernard Leroy Yax, who passed away six months ago; parents; sisters, Betty Panowicz and Laura Jean Larson; nephews, Michael Dzingle and Terry Rasmussen; sister-in-law, Maxine Rasmussen and brothers-in-law, Bob Rasmussen and Don Dzingle. Burial was in the Hillside Cemetery in Wolbach, NE. Published in The Grand Island Independent on January 20, 2012
