Bernard was born Sept. 12, 1938, on the family farm east of Scotia to Leroy and Ethel (Maxwell) Yax. Bernard attended school at Fish Creek and attended Scotia High School, graduating class of 1955. Bernard married Harriet Kay Larson at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wolbach on Nov. 24, 1957. They lived in the Sandhills outside of Ericson and Bernard worked on a ranch. They moved to Grand Island where he worked construction for many years including working on Interstate 80, connecting Nebraska to Wyoming and also worked on the Calamus Dam and Canal Project. The family moved to Yax's mini-ranch northeast of Cushing in 1971. Bernard continued to operate heavy machinery for a living, raised hogs and began Spring Creek kennels. They retired to St. Paul in 1999. Bernard purchased a farm northwest of Wolbach and began a labor of love restoring the abandoned buildings to a working farm and home, complete with cattle, sheep, a couple of cats, chickens and one mean old rooster. Bernard loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed helping his children with their businesses and homes. He enjoyed hosting cookouts, brunches and gatherings where friends and neighbors were always welcomed. He was a historian, carpenter and avid reader. He loved bluegrass music, western movies and tending to his roses. He is best known for his incredible story telling and keen sense of humor. His children recently hosted a surprise celebration for his 70th birthday complete with a country style buffet on the deck and a bluegrass band from Kentucky on the flat bed and enough neighbors, friends and family to fill the front yard. Working at home, tending to his livestock and buildings on the farm, attending livestock sales and trapping with his son, Tim were some of his other hobbies. Bernard is survived by wife, Kay Larson of St. Paul, daughters, Liz and spouse, Terry King, of Bradshaw, Becky Fisher and Rocke Jurzenski of St. Paul and son, Tim Yax of Grand Island; grandchildren, Jennifer Rother, Laura Cammack and spouse, Nick, Michael Yax and fiance, Jackie, Misti and Pat, Ayrisa Schuller, and Anna and Rachel King; great-grandchildren, Amnesty and JaKayia Kelley, Madaline and Sebastian Cammack, Rylan Yax, Morgan and Kaleb, and Dason Schuller; sisters, Jean Pedersen and spouse, Pete of Cotesfield, Nila Rasmussen of Elba, Vonnie Dzingle of Loup City; and brother-in-law, Dennis Rasmussen of Lincoln. Bernard was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Maxine Rasmussen, brothers-in-law, Robert Rasmussen and Don Dzingle, nephews, Michael Dzingle and Terry Rasmussen.
