In 1883, James came to Hand County when the Dakotas were opened up for settlement and staked a claim in Alden Township. He taught a country school to augment a small income. On August 14, 1887, he married Harriett Virginia Hershman, born December 4, 1870 and died July 30, 1939. They set up housekeeping on his claim in a sod shanty. When the bad years came in the 1890's, he, as did many others, relinquished his claim to try his fortune elsewhere. In 1891, he moved his wife and two children to Cavalier, North Dakota. The climate proved too severe for his health and the doctor advised him to get to a drier and warmer climate. With his wife and three children, he then left the Cavalier homes in a "prairie schooner" and headed for Texas. He took up residence on a small farm near Henrietta, Texas, and went into the dairy business. James soon sold out and in 1903, returned to South Dakota. Here he settled on a large farm in Spring Lake Township of Hand County. It was here he finished raising his family of eight boys and four girls. James and Harriett retired from the farm in 1932, and lived in Miller. He died August 3, 1942, and is buried in the GAR Cemetery in Miller. His son Carl F. took over the farm when James retired and is still living there. James and Harriett's children were Andrew, Helen Mary, Sarah Ellen, Paul John, Charles Edward, George Richard, Leslie Eugene, James Fletcher, Daniel Luther, Carl Frederick, Laura Bell and Anna May.
