Research notes provided by Cousins John and Pattie (Samson) Mook. Newspaper articles from Dobbs Ferry Register, Friday, April 2, 1897 and Three Oaks, Berrien Michigan, March 26, 1897 (page 1). The article states that Harry was adopted proving what he has said and his middle name is his real last name (Elwood). He also had a brother Charles Elwood, who was adopted at the same time. His brother was adopted by R.L. Thompson of Decatur, Michigan. They then moved to Kalkaska, Michigan. Charles' wife wanted to find out about her husband and found out he came from the Home for the Friendless in New York City. After finding out he had a brother the two started corresponding and finally met. It goes on to say the brothers are looking for their mother, who was still alive and looking for them in 1885. She was last known to be in Tarrytown, New York. 25 June 2019 - Cousins John and Pattie (Samson) Mook received preliminary word from the Orphan train Museum in Kansas, who had records for the Home of the Friendless. they had the records on Harry and his brother Charles. Harry's birth name is Stephen I. Elwood born 1 March 1864. His borther Charles' birth name is Charles Ireland Elwood and was born on 15 June 1866. They listed the mother as Margaret A. Elwood. She placed the boys after Charles first birthday. The father had died six months earlier. Researching Charles under the Thompson name, have not found any evidence he located his mother and no Thompson tree shows he was adopted. Charles death certificate lists his birth city as Tarrytown, New York. I have contacted Tarrytown Historical Society and no luck locating the Ellwood name in 1885. The Ellwood family is a New York family and moved to Michigan.
