He had been in failing health three years, and had submitted to surgery in St. Mary's Hospital in Nebraska City. He was bedfast for 10 weeks prior to his death. He was bedfast for 10 weeks prior to his death. He had reached the age of 88 years, 10 months and two days. Mr. Mershon was born near Vermont, Ill., September 2, 1870. His parents were George Hartman and Martha E. (Matthews) Mershon. He attended rural schools in Illinois and Nebraska, coming to this state with his parents at the time he was 15 years of age. They located six miles east of Tecumseh. His marriage to Clydia Souders of Cook took place March 31, 1892, near Cook. Three children were born to them. They established their home in Wilcox, and then moved near Cook in 1895. They farmed until 1914 when Mr. Mershon purchased a drug store in Cook. The store was sold to their son, Ralph D. Mershon, in 1918, and he assisted in the store until retirementDuring the 1888 blizzard, he was caught in the storm, but managed to reach home safely. He was a member of the Cook Methodist church and was affiliated with the Mt. Herman lodge No. 231 AF & AM of Cook. Surviving Mr. Mershon are one son, Ralph D. Mershon of Cook; one daughter, Mrs. Carl (Evelyn) Brown of Muskogee, Okla.; two granddaughters, Mrs. W. O. Mannschreck of Hubbell and Mrs. David Malden of Jonesboro, Ark.; and four great grandchildren, Linda, Pamela, Penny and Deborah Mannschreck of Hubbell.
