DIED OF SPANISH FLU Word was received in Stella Saturday that Harry Farno one of the boys who was sent to Fort Riley from that city, had died from an attack of Spanish Flu Friday. FUNERAL OF HARRY FARNO. (Special to the Star) STELLA, Neb., Oct. 18- The funeral services of Harry Farno was held Monday afternoon at the home of his brother, Charles Farno, near Stella. Harry Farno died at Fort Riley last Friday after a week's illness with the Spanish influenza which developed into pneumonia. He had been in camp just seven weeks. He was 28 years old. Allen Crawley of Armour, a brother-in-law, went to the fort to bring the body home. The Stella home guards were in charge of the funeral. Burial was made in Pawnee. Farno, youngest son of the late Charles and Martha Farno, was born on a farm four miles southeast of Stella, January 4, 1890. When he was four years old his parents moved to Pawnee county, where he made his home for seventeen years. After the death of his father seven years ago he and his mother moved to Stella. His mother died four years ago, and afterward he made his home with his brother. Always a quiet and a conscientious manner, always considerate and ever thoughtful of others, Harry Farno had a wonderful and likeable disposition. His friends were numbered by his acquaintances. He was never known to speak ill of another, and had great charity for the faults of others. He was kind-hearted and thoughtful in the extreme. Of a quiet and thoughtful turn of mind, he was a great reader, and was anxious to keep abreast of the times to all knowledge that could be a help to him and his country. It was only in intimate conversation with him that one discovered the deep well of knowledge and information that he possessed. At once realizing the deep significance of the times, he was ready to go when his country called him to the service. He entered Camp Funston August 29, and was in the service only about forty days when he fell a victim to the dread scourge of influenza that is now sweeping over the country. Although in training only a short time, Harry Farno was a good and an exemplary soldier. His conduct was perfect while in camp and he was one of the millions of American boys who are fast bringing the Kaiser and German autocracy to the dust. In this great work Harry Farno played his part, and he died for his country just as truly as if he had died on the fields of France. The Stella home guards had charge of the funeral. Rev. Davis preached an impressive sermon and R. A. Clark spoke of the supreme sacrifice that Harry Farno made for his country. The floral offerings were man and beautiful. The home guards, relatives and friends, accompanied the body to Pawnee City. The deep sympathy of the community goes out to the brother and sisters, all of whom were at the funeral, Charles R. Farno, Mrs. Miller of Pawnee county, Mrs. Crawley of Armour, Mrs. Phelps of Rock county, and Mrs. Powell of Humboldt.- STELLA PRESS (Thanks goes to Researcher Barbara Schwartz for sending these for his memorial.)
