Martin celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary Tuesday, March 13, 1928, with all their children and grandchildren present with the exception of their eldest daughter, Mrs. Lulu Sutcliffe, who lives in Los Angeles, California. The children present were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Burroughs and son, Lyle. Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Martin and four children, Glen, Mae, Rouen, and Jean, all of Clarksville; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Martin and daughter, Marian of Waterloo, Iowa. Other relatives were Mrs. Ida Walsh and Mrs. Jessie French, sisters of Mrs. Martin, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Martin and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Martin. Other guest were Dr. and Mrs. W.E. Day, Mrs. Elizabeth Hickle and daughter, Alma, Mrs. Idella Wood, Miss Lena Schrage and Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Shafer, Mrs. Shafer, formerly Miss Demetra Knapp, being the only guest present, living around Clarksville, having the distinction, aside from relatives, of attending the wedding fifty years ago. The home was appropriately decorated in gold and white.. White Bells being suspended from the chandeliers. The chairs for the honor guests being likewise decorated. The feast, provided by the children, was served on tables decorated with broad bands of gold and white, and bouquets of yellow jonquils. The outstandng feature of the dinner was a wedding cake, beautifully decorated in gold and white, baked by Mrs. Charles Martin, bearing the dates 1878 - 1928. These worthy people were the recipients of many beautiful gifts of china, gold plated silver, flowers and cards of congratulations. The crowning gift was a tray of gold coins from relatives and friends amounting to $55.50. A pleasant feature of the afternoon was that of the Social Circle club, of which Mrs. Martin is a member, calling in a body to offer their congratulations and presenting a beautiful bouquet of yellow and blusih roses. A telegram was received just after dinner from Mr. and Mrs. Albert Norton, of Carlsbad, Cal., conveying their congratulations. They having been guests of the wedding of long ago. From Grandma Coon's Scrapbook Mrs. Rouen Martin Called In Death On Friday Funeral Service Sunday P.M. – Interment made in Lynwood Cemetery Hattie Rouen Shadbolt, daughter of Jerome and Louise Shadbolt was born April 17, 1860 at Clarksville, Iowa. She attended common and high school at and near Clarksville, which community has been her home all her life. She was married to Mr. J. P. Martin, March 13, 1878, at Clarksville. Her companion preceded her to death about three years ago. To their home, six children were born, one son, Orrin and her daughter, Nina, going on before her to the other shore by a number of years. The four living children are: Mrs. Lulu Sutcliff of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Anna Bourroughs and John J. Martin both of Clarksville and Charles L. Martin of Waterloo. Mrs. Martin was a charter member of the Eastern Star of our local community. It is through that she united with the Methodist church very closely to 50 or 55 years ago. And she retained her very active interest in the church until the last. This is the most worthy record for our current generation to emulate. She leaves besides her four living children, two brothers and two sisters, and six grandchildren. The brothers and sisters are: Mrs. Ida Walsh and Mrs. Jessie French both of Clarksville, Mrs. And Mrs. Charles Sumner Shadbolt of Minneapolis. and Elbon Shadbolt of Horton, Ia. She also leaves a very dear sister-in-law, Mrs. Katherine Shannon of Barnes, Kansas. Mrs. Martin had been ill and confined to her bed with heart trouble for almost a full year before her passing. Her concern for her loved ones of life she had, especially at times a remarkably clear mind. Her religious views and convictions were deep and definite. Her concern for her loved ones was alert till almost her last day. She passed peacefully away Dec. 15, at the home of her son, John. She was ready and anxious to depart and be with her Lord whom she loved and tried to serve. Her going from earth will leave a void no one else can fill. But she will form a part of the waiting and expecting host on the other side. O, the glad welcome and joyful reunions being planned by our Heavenly Father on the other side for all who love and obey him have.
