Louisa Marie Shadbolt was born in Genessee county, New York, on May 13, 1829, and died at her home in Clarksville, Iowa, on May 14, 1918, at the advanced age of 89 years and one day. She grew to womanhood in New York state, and was married in 1846 to Jerome Shadbolt. To the new home there came in the course of years seven children, five of whom survive the parents. Those who remain are Mrs. William Walsh, Mrs. James Martin and Mrs. Hiram French, of Clarksville, Iowa; Albion of Horton, Iowa; Sumner of Minneapolis, Minn. One son, Jerome and one daughter, Cleo preceded the parents to the life beyond. The family came to Iowa in May, 1855, locating at Clarksville, where they made their home until 1866, when they moved to a farm a short distance north of Clarksville. Here they endured all the trails of pioneer life and were found industriously engaged in assisting in the development of the country through all of the years in which their lives were given to activity. For 26 years they remained at the task, and their labors were blessed with prosperity. In 1892 they retired from this active work and returned to Clarksville. Mr. Shadbolt died a number of years ago, and for the past few years the mother was cared for by her daughter, Mrs. Hiram French, and her husband, who spared no pains to make her last days comfortable. She leaves besides her sons and daughters, 14 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren, all but two of the grandchildren being present for the funeral services. The six grandsons of the deceased acting as pall bearers. On account of the absence of Rev. W.H. Sinclair, Rev. J.W. Chase of the Greene Presbyterian church was called to take charge of the last services, which were held in the Presbyterian church at Clarksville at two o'clock on Thursday afternoon. The songs rendered by Mrs. Dr. C.C. Smith and Mrs. Rev. W.H. Sinclair contributed much of comfort and of impressiveness to the occasion. Burial was made in the Clarksville cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. H.S. Scott, Ms. W.M. Wade, and Mrs. M. Head, all of Plainfield, Iowa were among those from out of town who gathered with the sorrowing relatives and friends to express their regard for the departed and their sympathy for those who remain. Grandma Shadbolt was a member of the Presbyterian church of Clarksville, having united with that body in 1900, and until age and ill health prevented, she was accustomed to find her place among those who worshipped in God's house, as well as to render willing and generous support to all it's activities. As a mother she was filled with acts of care and devotion for her children, whose interests she felt demanded her constant attention. She was a memeber of the Woman's Relief Corps and was always interested and helpful in the plans and labors of that worthy organization. She was privileged to live a long, eventful, and useful life, which will cause her to be missed by all those who knew her, and will draw the ready sympathy of all to those who in her departure have been called upon to suffer loss.
