Martin, Oct. 31, 1906, age 83 years, 6 months and 22 days. Mr. Shadbolt was born April 9, 1823 in Stillwater, Saratoga County, New York. He went to Attica, Genesee county at the age of three. He was married to Miss L. Louisa Main at Batavia, Genesee County, New York on the 3rd day of September 1845. In 1847, they emigrated to the territory of Wisconsin arriving in Milwaukee on the 14th day of October. From there, they went to the city of Grafton, Wis., which was 21 miles further north. At Grafton, Mr. Shadbolt purchased a water power and erected a large turning factory for the manufacturing of chairs, which proved a renumerative business. In 1855 he sold his business and came to Clarksville, Iowa arriving on the 4th day of July. By trade, Mr. Shadbolt was an architect and builder. He and the late Mr. John Madigan worked together for thirty-two years. In 1864, he was enrolled in the service, joining the 15th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, marching with Sherman's army to the sea. He was also in the grand review before President Lincoln in the city of Washington at the close of the war. He wad honorably discharged at Davenport, Iowa. As a man Mr. Shadbolt was noted for his integrity. During his residence in Clarksville he had made many friends. Deceased was a member of the G.A.R. and of the Presbyterian Church. He and Mrs. Shadbolt united with the church on April 15, 1900. The surviving memebers of his family are his wife, Mrs. L. Louisa Shadbolt of Clarksville, Iowa; Mrs. Ida M. Walsh of Clarksville; Mr. C. Sumner Shadbolt of Dayton township; Mr. Albion B. Shadbolt of Spring Lake, Bremer county, Iowa; Mrs. Rouen Martin of Butler township and Mrs. Jessie O. French of Butler township. Two children are now dead -- Jerome who offered his life for his country during the dark and bloody struggles of the Civil War at the age of 15 years, surviving until the war closed, when he was was honorably discharged. He died December 17, 1871, and Cleo P. who died in infancy. Funeral services were held on Friday afternoon at the Presbyterian church, Rev. H.A. French delivering the discourse. The capacity of the church was more than taxed by relatives and old friends. Interment was in Lynwood. "History of Butler County, Iowa" by Irving H Hart Vol II. S.J. Clarke Publishing Co. 1994. On page 54 under the heading Jerome Shadbolt it reads. Jerome Shadbolt passed away at the venerable age of eighty-three years, six months and twenty-two days, on the 31st of October, 1906. He had long been a resident of Butler county, having arrived here in the year 1855. He was a man well known for his business integrity and enterprise and much of his admirable character is indicated in the fact that he was in partnership with one man for thirty-two years. He was born in Stillwater, Saratoga county, New York, April 9, 1823, and when three years of age was taken by his parents to Genesee county, that state, where he remained until he reached the age of twenty-four. It was on the 3rd of September, 1846 in Batavia, Genesee county, that he married Miss Louise L. Main, who was born there May 13, 1829, a daughter of William and Sophia (Briggs) Main, the former a native of Maryland and the latter, of Boston, Massachusetts. Mrs. Main was a daughter of Dr. William Briggs, a physician and surgeon under General George Washington at the time when he first took command of the American forces. Dr. Briggs was a prominent member of the medical profession in Boston and was a splendidly educated man. Following the war he took an active part in government affairs. His daughter Sophia was left an orphan at the age of nine years, at the age of nine-teen was a teacher in a high school of Boston and at twenty-two years of age was married, becoming the wife of William Main, a merchant of that city. She died in Batavia, New York. In their family were eight children who reached adult age but Mrs. Louise Shadbolt is the only one now living.
