Description	:	Hazel Laura Oliver Smith, beloved and courageous mother, grandmother and friend passed away peacefully Thursday morning, Jan. 24, 2002, at Vienna Village Retirement Home in Pfafftown. She was born to James Brush and Virginia Brown Oliver on Aug. 24, 1904, in Sparta, Ga. She graduated from Georgia State College for Women in 1925 and received an additional degree in later years from High Point College. Her death was preceded by that of her husband, Charles Milton Smith, in 1965. She was born to James Brush and Virginia Brown Oliver on Aug. 24, 1904, in Sparta, Ga. She graduated from Georgia State College for Women in 1925 and received an additional degree in later years from High Point College. Her death was preceded by that of her husband, Charles Milton Smith, in 1965. She is survived by their only daughter, Nancy Josephine Smith Thomas and her husband, John Charles Thomas; and her grandchildren, Laura Melanie Thomas, named for her grandmother, and John Charles Thomas Jr., who both live in Philadelphia. "Mimi" maintained with her two grandchildren a continued dialogue and keen interest in their careers, goals and pursuit of happiness. She had a long, successful career as an elementary-school teacher in North Carolina and Florida. Her last position was at Johnson Street Elementary School in High Point where she taught with her good friend, Lola Smith Hodgin, for 25 years. She enjoyed gardening, decorative arts, needlework, a variety of sports and visiting with her friends, particularly Mary King, Mamie Lucas and Ann Lore, in recent years. She was a staunch supporter of Wake Forest basketball and the ACC. She belonged to Wesley Memorial Methodist Church in High Point before joining Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. Visitation with the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at the home of her daughter, Nancy Thomas. A graveside service conducted by the Rev. Jack Yarborough will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Brown Mountain Baptist Church, Westfield. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 W. Fifth St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101; or Brown Mountain Baptist Church, Westfield, NC 27053.
