Description	:	Jochim (James) Fredrich Arp was the fifth of six children born to Jochim Arp and Trin Finck at Barsbek, Plon, Schleiswig-Holstein, Germany. Jochim left Germany in 1872 to emigrate to America. He settled at Rock Island, Illinois where he married Katharine Stoltenberg on June 14, 1873 at Rock Island, Illinois. Their first son, Gustaf Arp, was born at Rock Island, Jan 1874. The family moved to buy a farm near Clutier, in Oneida township, Tama County, Iowa. Jochim owned 240 acres north of John Christian Arp's 120 acres and Henry and Anna Arp's 160 acres. The next five children were born at this farm. Jochim became a naturalized citizen on October 1, 1885 at Tama County, Iowa. ******* Obituary from Traer Star Clipper, Traer, Iowa, Friday, October 16, 1903 pg. 5, Belle Plaine: Jochim F. Arp, a farmer whose home is near Clutier, succumbed to disease within a few miles of his home, dying at the Burley Home Sunday morning at about 8 o'clock. He was on his way from California where he had been in search of health. His death was due to heart failure and a general breaking down of the system. Mr. Arp stopped off at the Burley Home Saturday evening, too ill to complete his journey. Sunday morning, a team was dispatched to his family, a son coming down to see the father before life was gone. Other members of the family followed later. Mr. Arp was a German born in Schleswig-Holstein. He was sixty-one years of age and had resided in Iowa for thirty - five years. He was survived by the wife and several children. The body was taken over land Sunday to the home. The funeral was held at 1 p.m. Wednesday. The above death was quite unexpected and brought sorrow to many home in Oneida township where this aged German farmer has lived many years. It was not known that he was worse or was on his way home. As the hearse was on the way to the home from Belle Plaine, followed by the relatives, the horses took fright at a train and ran. Herman Arp, a nephew of the deceased, was thrown from the hearse and had a leg broken. Others were thrown to the ground but no one else was hurt to speak of except Mrs. Jochim Arp. She was badly bruised but no bones were broken. Dr. Wagner was called and gave all the parties attention. He thinks they will all get along. The funeral was attended by a very large crowd, perhaps the largest funeral party ever known in Oneida township.
