Description	:	Helen E. Long, 86, of Waverly, Iowa, died Saturday morning, August 20, 2005, at the Waverly Health Center. Helen E. McConkey was born on October 24, 1918, on the family farm near Sumner to Harry and Lydia (McDonald) McConkey. As the United States was sliding into the Great Depression her family was forced to move from the farm to town-first to Fredericksburg and later to New Hampton where Helen graduated from high school. Long, 86, of Waverly, Iowa, died Saturday morning, August 20, 2005, at the Waverly Health Center. Helen E. McConkey was born on October 24, 1918, on the family farm near Sumner to Harry and Lydia (McDonald) McConkey. As the United States was sliding into the Great Depression her family was forced to move from the farm to town-first to Fredericksburg and later to New Hampton where Helen graduated from high school. She then taught country school for a time. On April 29, 1938 she was united in marriage to Joseph C. Long at St. Joseph's Rectory in New Hampton. They made their home in New Hampton where their first two children, Barbara and Judith, were born. The family later moved to Waverly where their son, Michael, was born. In 1954, Helen went to work for Sears in Waverly, retiring in 1983. In 1971, Joseph was forced to retire because ALS had entered his life and Helen not only worked but cared for her loving husband. Joseph died on July 16, 1980, and three years later Helen retired. On October 10, 1992 Helen married Wayne Huber and the couple has lived in Waverly ever since. Helen was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Waverly, where she had been a member of the Ave Maria Study Club and the C.C.W. She was a proud member of the D.A.R., the American Legion & Amvets Auxiliary, and the Waverly Health Center Auxiliary. Over the years Helen has been a very dedicated Democrat, serving both locally and on the state level. She had also served on the board of Mitchell Manor in Waverly. She loved to play bridge and read, to spend time with her family and friends, and traveling. In 1998 she and Wayne took a very special trip to Ireland, a trip she talked about often. One of her most rewarding community efforts was serving as co-chair of the Bremer County History Book Committee in the mid 1980's with her very dear friend, Bernice Kerdus. Helen is survived by her husband, Wayne, of Waverly; her three children, Barbara & David Quinn of Waverly, Judith & Will Loof of Geneva, Illinois, Michael & Marianna Long of Studio City, California; 11 grandchildren, Ann (Westendorf) Maas, Scott Westendorf, Todd Westendorf, Elizabeth (Loof) Adey, Eric Loof, Katherine (Loof) Sizemore, David Loof, James Long, Jayme (Long) Homan, Cyrus Fuhrmeister, Naomi Fuhrmeister; and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Joseph; three grandsons, David Westendorf, William & Patrick Loof; and two sisters, Marie Wilson and Ruth Borcherding. Funeral services will b e 10:30 AM on Wednesday, August 24, 2005, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Waverly, with the Rev. Mike Tauke presiding. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Waverly. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, with a 7:00 PM Scripture Service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Cedar-Valley Hospice in Waverly, to the American Cancer Society or to the donors choice.
