Wenburg Funeral Home in Arapahoe is in charge of the arrangements She was born Oct. 10, 1912, on a farm northeast of Edison to Thomas E. and Nora A. (Sanderson) Hays. On Feb. 23, 1930, she married Earl Cross at North Platte. He died March 8, 1953. Survivors include her sons, Vaughn Cross of Pinedale, Wyo., and Thomas Cross of Cheyenne, Wyo.; twin daughters, Sharon Flueckinger and her husband, Eugene, of Manitowoc, Wis., and Sharol Cross of Lincoln; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Hazel Cross of Arapahoe and Patricia Dold of Cheney, Kan. Helen's education began in a country school known as the Girch School on Turkey Creek north of Edison. In spring 1919, the family moved closer to Edison. Helen attended all grades until the middle of her 12th grade when she married Earl William Cross of Edison. They lived on the family farm. In March 1946, they moved to a farm northeast of Edison. Earl was killed in a one-vehicle accident. With the boys away from home in the service of their country, Helen and the twins moved to Edison. In May 1953, Helen started working at Swanson's Poultry Plant in Oxford and worked there until it closed in March 1957. Helen moved to Lincoln in March 1957 to further her education in civil service. She earned her high school diploma and graduated with the class of 1957 in Edison. She worked as a dental assistant for the same dentist for 20½ years and moved back to Edison, where she enjoyed gardening, yard work and renewing friendships. In 1986, she was baptized in the Christian Church in Edison. She was active with the church activities, Ladies Aid and fellowship dinners. When she moved to Arapahoe in October 1996, she transferred her membership to the Church of Christ. She was a member of the Edison American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed piece quilts and quilting. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Thomas Hays; and sisters, Agnes Fisher, Christine McDonald and Alice Watts.
