Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m., Fri., Jan. 30 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden with Msgr. Richard Zenk officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery at Hawarden. A Prayer Service will be at 7:30 p.m. at the church. Helen Akin was born February 16, 1913 in Hawarden the daughter of Charles H. and Anna (Cowen) Sedgwick. She graduated from the Hawarden High Sehoollh 1931. She attended Stephenr College in Columbia, MO, and graduated from Drake University in Des Moines with Teachers Certificate. She was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theata Sorority at Drake. Helen taught school in Cleghorn, St. Mary's School in Hawarden and in Westfield. She worked many years as a nurses aide in the Hawarden Hospital. Helen married Dr. Joseph Akin at Montrose, SD, Dec. 31, 1938. The couple lived in Kansas City, MO, Des Moines, Akron and Hawarden. Joseph died October 29,1992. She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church, honorary member of St. Mary's Guild and member of the Hawarden Hospital Auxiliary. Survivors include two sons, Jerry Akin and his wife Marti of Cincinnati, OH, and Dan Akin of Oakdale, MN; two daughters, Dr. Kathleen "Ginger" Akin of Lincoln, NE, and Susan Robertson and husband Dennis of Hawarden; two sisters-in-law, Mary Sedgwick of Fort Walton Beach, FL, and Marjorie Akiri of Evansville, IN; 8 grandchildren, Christie, Eric and Erika Akin, Kate and Carly Akin, Teresa Phillips, Wendy Solberg and Stacy Lightcap; and 7 great-grandchildren.
